K/R: Cameron Questions

So, the other day I bought the True Religion Cameron jeans in Saratoga wash. They are 100% cotton. There is whiskering but no distressing, and the wash is medium dark.

These are a very pricey jean for me. As in very. However, I am taking to heart Angie's advice to put more of my money towards the items that I actually wear on a regular basis, and jeans are the staple of my wardrobe. I figure that if these work out, the CPW will end up very low.

But I don't want to make a foolish purchase. Especially in light of Denise's recent post on age-appropriate dressing, I am mindful that I am not getting younger. And these jeans may make me look like I have forgotten that simple truth. I know Denise rocks Camerons like nobody's business. But I think one of the points of her discussion was that what is age-appropriate is individual. Denise always had a rocker-chic side to her style and has probably always been the coolest girl around. Whereas I...well...let's just say that I have rarely heard myself described as "cool."  "Classy," maybe. On a good day.

My husband commented that these were very different from any other jeans I had ever owned. That was a neutral comment, not negative; in fact, he's a huge fan of the BF look in general and on me in particular, so he won't rule these out simply because they're on the loose side. I think he was reacting mainly to the back pockets.

100% cotton makes them super comfortable. The detailing is really interesting and fun; the workmanship is stellar; they're a huge step up from my GAPS.

But I would love to know if they are fitting me the way they should, whether you think they're age-appropriate for me (given my lifestyle, community, figure, etc.), and if they are a keep, where I should hem these.

On me, they're more or less a straight leg jean. I guess they are actually tapered from the knee, but the bottom width is like a straight. I've tried them on with my Report booties and my new sandals. But pretty much any shoe or bootie would do.

Is this more or less the right length? I have them turned under about an inch and a half on the uncuffed leg.

The cuff I would like to make a bit shorter, but there is too much material to roll it again now. So shortening would help with that as well. But I definitely want to be able to wear these as full length jeans, so if shortening will make that impossible then I will need to rethink that idea.

There is a lot of extra material on the inner thigh/crotch area. This is a novelty for me. My thighs are on the large side, so I've never really experienced it, and I wonder if that is the way they are supposed to fit. It doesn't really show all that much in the pictures; I don't know why. Those who own these, is that the way they are? Or maybe it will soften and drape a bit as the jeans soften?

Also showing where they fit on the hip to ensure this is right. They're below the top of my hip bones. But don't fall off without a belt. And no, I don't plan on revealing my mid-section in public!! :-)

They're definitely a boyish cut and I know that is not everyone's cup of tea. But that is not an issue for me. I like boyish. Really, it's all about the details -- whether they are working or whether I should reconsider.

Thank you for reading this far!

I don't have any jeans advice to share -- I will leave that to the experts.  But wow, look at your tight, toned tummy!
  • Mo replied 11 years ago
I think they look great and the wash is a wise choice if you don't want to skew too trendy/young.  If you want, I'll grab my pair that I've worn this last week (so they are stretched out already) and throw them on to show you how they fit me.  I wear mine just above hip bone, but I think we are all built so differently, that may not be a salient point anyway lol.
  • jayne replied 11 years ago
They look great until I see the back pockets.  Nope, not a fan of those.

Fit wise and color, you probably cannot do better!  But you'll have to decide if YOU like the pockets.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
    That would be great, Mo!

These wouldn't fit above my hip bone, because the rise is too short for it to go there on me. That is actually one of my questions -- whether the fit in the thigh area is due to a rise problem. I do have a fairly long rise. So maybe they're not the right jean for me. OTOH, some low rise jeans feel downright uncomfortable. These feel good, and the whiskering seems more or less where it should be (I think.)
  • sarah replied 11 years ago
Suz, I think they look great on you. BUT, I have a few concerns - mostly just playing devil's advocate here, since I know you want to absolutely sure. First, those back pockets may end up being limiting, in that you can't wear them with anything that covers them (besides jackets) or you'll end up with crazy lumps and bumps. Is that going to be a problem? Second, to me they don't look SUPER special compared to your other jeans, which makes me wonder whether it's worth it... Just posing some questions to ask yourself.

And how do you keep those love handles at bay?!
  • Kristin SF replied 11 years ago
I think the fit and wash are fantastic, and they read as age-appropriate to me. I think your proposed hem looks good, but I'll be interested to hear what Angie says, esp in terms of the scrunch factor. With jeans like these, what really is the ideal PPL? I have no idea.

The pockets give the jeans some interest. I read somewhere, either here or on Amazon, that you either love or hate the TR pockets. I initially was in the dislike category, but they are growing on me. Also, these particular pockets are not as blingy as some of the other styles, so it's more understated, almost.

For me, I would be concerned only about too much pocket detailing overwhelming my body, since I am only 5'1.5"ish. But you are taller. BTW, I am using these jeans as a carrot - when I finally rid myself of the extra Christmas pounds, I will be trying these on! Thanks for the inspiration!
  • Mo replied 11 years ago
I'll throw them on, then.  I have rise issues, too.  Most low rises are obscene on me.  Maybe I'll measure my navel, hip bone, etc for comparison, since we're the same height.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Kristin, I'm a couple of inches taller at 5' 4" but I have short legs, so what you mention was a concern of mine as well. In general I dislike pocket detailing but for some reason I actually like it on these. I can't really explain why. Maybe because, as you say, it's almost understated.

Sarah, I never wear tunics or long tops, so I don't think I'd be bothered by tops bumping out in back, but it's a valid point, for sure.

Your other point is even more important. Are they super special enough to justify the cost? Some of it is really hard to show in a photo. The workmanship and the detailing really are different -- plus 100% cotton, which is so rare these days.

I own only a couple of premium jeans (other brands) and so far, I have to say, they have been totally worth it to me. The differences are subtle (at first) but over long term wear you really notice them and I end up reaching for the premiums much more than the others when I have a choice.
  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago
I cant articulate why but I dont adore them for you.... I think I am having a hard time with the wiskering. Although, I know from taking photos myself that wiskering typically looks less stark IRL than in a photo, esp. if there is a flash. So perhaps this is a non-issue. I do quite like that your pair fit quite a bit more loosely than the model on your linked page and the bag you pinch in #6 doesnt seem noticeable in the other photos. I am wondering if I am being helpful at all? ....
  • Kristin SF replied 11 years ago
Suz, what does the 100% cotton give you? Less bag-out factor? I'm not sure I understand the benefits, although I know Angie was searching high and low for 100% cotton jeans.....
  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago
I agree that I reach for premium whenever it is clean so that is a very valid point!
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Kristin, it's a different fit and feel. IMO there is less bag out...but I am not sure bagging would be noticeable when the jeans are this loose anyway and when you are purposely going for a looser look. 100% cotton is also much more wearable in warmer temperatures, yet not as freezing in cooler weather. It breathes better. And -- harder to articulate -- it has a sort of vintage integrity. If you are old enough to have worn jeans before they started adding poly and spandex to them, you'll understand. It softens up over time, shapes itself to an individual body. Becomes "yours" in some undefinable way.

Don't get me wrong. I also love jeans that have a bit of poly (for strength) and lycra (for movement) especially if we are talking skinny jeans that are supposed to fit snug and most especially anything that is supposed to be tucked into boots. But a 100% cotton jean is a special breed.

Sarah, thank you for your honesty -- I appreciate it!
  • Angie replied 11 years ago
These are all EXCELLENT questions, Suz. And I liked hubby's neutral comment.

I happen to be wearing these right now! How fun is that :). I feel especially equipped to answer your question! Mine do fall off without a belt, which I guess means that I chose a baggier version of exactly the same jeans.

Next, you need fashionable bottoms to change up the landscape of your modern classic tops - this is a great option. The look will last for several years (hence I invested just like you might do too). These jeans are not a fad.

Next, TOTALLY age-appropriate. I can see some of my 60+ yearold clients wear these because they have the attitude, confidence and style persona. On the other hand, the style would be too trendy for some of my 30 something clients precisely because they are not a match for their attitude and style persona. You have the attitude and style persona for this look.

I keep them loooooooooong and full length. So I cuff them once so that you can still see the hems (roll is too short), and wear them with booties, heeled oxfords, wedged sneaks or slipper flats. I like the length on your right leg sans the roll.

Okay! I am off to work for the day. Back on the forum much later.

  • Mo replied 11 years ago
My personal rise is a little over 11" to my navel.  My hip bones are about 3 1/2 to 4 inches below my navel or 7 or 8" rise.  The rise on my Cameron's are 8" in the front, but because the back rise is longer/looser it fits fine.  Other snug jeans in 8" rise are too low for me.  Funny. Mine have some stretch, not 100% cotton like yours.
Anyway, here's the pics.  I got 26's as I like a bit snugger fit than true BF's.  My inseams are 31" which are perfect for full length wear, which is how I wear them at work.
I'm pointing at my hip bone in a few pics so you can see where they ride.  I could wear them lower, but I prefer less crotch drop.  I grabbed the excess fabric in a couple, too, as it's deceiving in the pics - they are not as snug as they appear.
Hope this helps!  As for the pockets, I've been a fan for years, so they are no problem for me.  I don't often wear things that cover them, and if I do, they aren't snug across where they would show as lumpy or bumpy.
  • rae replied 11 years ago
Well I still think they look great and are 100% age appropriate for you. You have an edge to your style and need it to feel happy and un-frumpy. The dark wash keeps it from going into super trendy territory. Plus your style reminds me a lot of Angie's at times, and there is no way I'd question BF jeans on her at any age.
  • Joy replied 11 years ago

I like them on you except for the rear pockets. I know it's a look but not one I find flattering, but that's just an old lady opinion.
Have you tried Citizens of Humanity or Paige jeans?

ETA: I like the flaps on the pockets and wear them myself, but it's the low pocket placement that bothers me on these. It doesn't look as low on Malina though, so maybe it's the photo angle.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
    Angie has spoken!

Personally Suz - if I thought I could wear these jeans anywhere NEAR as good as you, I'd be pressing that "buy" button right now!
  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago
I agree with Shannon, you look amazing in these. I think they are very right for you, style-wise. Definitely not age-inappropriate. Rae said it well, too.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Rae, thank you - we may be jean twins as well as shirt and cat twins!

Mo, thank you so much for taking the time to take these pics - they are super helpful!  You look great in yours. And I can see how they would be really good for work as well as play.

I think maybe the 100% cotton ones fit a bit differently than the other ones. Maybe Denise would know that since she has various pairs. And these do seem to sit higher on you than on me. My rise from navel to crotch point is also 11". But my waist is several inches higher than my navel.

Angie, thank you so much for weighing in on this and for your length recommendations! I definitely want to be able to wear them as a full length jean but I think unhemmed they will be too long for me to do that.

If you see them as a good option and one with staying power, that is encouraging. They are certainly a very comfortable jean and wearable.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Joy, you are a joy! It's not just the photo angle...the pockets sit higher on Mo because the jeans are sitting higher on her for some reason. Just the way they fit - more slouch on me. I will consider and reconsider.

Ingunn, Shannon, thank you both for the compliments.
  • Laura replied 11 years ago
Suz, I think you should keep and wear and do not hem! You could also try a different style in True Religions if you are worried about tiring of the boyfriend sihouette. The True Religions seems to fit you really well!
  • K. Period. replied 11 years ago
I think it is interesting that these get such a mix of reactions.  I'm firmly in the Angie camp on this one! I think they look phenomenal on you.  I have a relatively flat rear, so I love patch pockets because they round me out.  They serve the same function here, where the jeans are oversized. They add bulk to the rear view to give you a fuller, rounder appearance.  I think it is a really rare person who has the gorgeous figure to fill out boyfriend jeans without pockets (Sveta springs to mind because hers look spectacular on her).  I'm certainly not that person. For me, patch pockets would be necessary.

As to age appropriate, boy oh boy do I agree with Angie. It depends on the person and their sass.  You shouldn't question yours, Ms. Super Sassy Awesomeness.  Just like you pushed Denise not to question her style, you need to have confidence in yours too.  The fact that your jeans are a more conservative wash makes them work for you.  I refused to buy boyfriend jeans with holes in them because they weren't me, but I can point straight to a picture of Denise wearing an amazing pair of distressed jeans that are gorgeous and perfectly her.  You picked out a pair of jeans that are very you.  Just the right mix of trend and classic.  You've made the trend yours by making it personally appropriate.  Trust yourself here, my friend. These are great!

  • Glory replied 11 years ago
They look excellent. Totally age appropriate and can fit into your wardrobe - meaning I think you will have lots to pair them with.
Perhaps snap a few more photos of these and your other jeans and do a compare?
On the other side - I don't think you should grow to love them. I think it should be love at first site. What is giving you pause?
  • texstyle replied 11 years ago
Suz, it is pretty hard to say you don't look anything but amazing in these jeans or most jeans, because you do. That may be more of a fitness than a fit assessment though. It's so hard to tell fit from photos but you've said they feel really good so let's assume the fit is spot on.

On to the details. The pockets are detailed. And the sit a bit low on purpose I realize after looking at Mo's. This is just the way this particular style is designed. Do most of your jeans have pockets that sit at this same height?  I would prefer slightly higher pockets for myself. But that's a detail you may not mind at all. For me it just seems more figure flattering.

I can relate to the high price. I don't think I've ever spent more than $80 on a pair of jeans and I do wear jeans nearly every day.  And even with all I've learned here I'm still a bit skeptical if it's "worth" it for me - but that doesn't mean it's not worth it for you. Sometimes I change jeans in the same day because I've been out in the garden or hiking through the cactus. So mine are going to get washed nearly every time I wear them. Even $200 jeans aren't going to love that treatment.  And I'm at a time in life where I'm guessing my body might change some over the next couple of years. So I have to gauge my investments in clothing.

If these jeans were only $100 would you love them and not think twice?
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Glory, the only thing that was giving me pause was the fit of the thigh, which is really hard to show in the pictures for some reason. And the length -- I didn't know how long to keep them or short to make them. Well, and the cost. If I am going to spend that much I really want to be certain.

K can - you are so sweet. And I also want to thank you for your recommendation of the J Crew toothpicks. I got those, too, and did no K/R because I was 100% certain on the KEEP. I got the low-rise but might also like a mid-rise pair. I feel they are really versatile and simple jeans. I like them  as a complement to these ones. The J Crew are slim, classic, dark wash, and simple. The Camerons are a bit rugged, funky, and fashion-forward.

Laura, good point - I had never tried any of their jeans before. Maybe I will in future!
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Good points, Texstyle. Yes, if they were cheaper I wouldn't give it a thought, but I want to make sure before I cut those tags, you know? And yes - it is so hard to judge fit (especially of darker items) in these darn photos. Oh well. Now we know what professional photographers go through to make the clothing even show up in the pics!
  • pil replied 11 years ago

Wow, Suz, these are really great on you! Love the wash, whiskering and fit although I don't quite know what to make of the back pockets. While the price tag would certainly give me pause, they are definitely NOT age inappropriate. You definitely have the verve and sparkle to wear these!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago
These look fantastic on you, Suz.  I have no issues regarding age-appropriateness as you class up everything you wear.  I own a pair of these in a different wash and they fit me similarly.  No pix yet because i need to get them hemmed (and yes, i'm keeping them).

I think there may be some confusion between the style (slouchy BF youthful) and the dark more dressy wash.  Most BFs I've seen are not quite this dark, even with the fading.  I don't think that's a bad thing, though - just thinking that maybe you're feeling some cognitive dissonance there.  Obviously they will fade with wear and I can totally see you rocking these in lots of great ways.
  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago
Love the bf jeans on you -- including this pair -- although I have to admit I'm not a fan of the pockets.  I think Angie's point about needing some modern/trendy bottoms to balance the classic tops in your wardrobe is one to take to heart (no surprise here).  When I put together an outfit, I'm often looking for a kind of balance between elements --- and that little edge is part of your core style.

As for the money --- TR jeans are expensive, but not Burberry or Prada expensive, and you could always pull a Rae and sell them on ebay if they don't end up getting wear.   Sometimes I think we need an exceptional item to give our style a little push forward!
  • Glory replied 11 years ago
Perhaps try them on again tomorrow and see if your doubts have perished. Sometimes that works for me. But I agree you want to be certain that you love them. Are there items you buy and you know immediately or do you usually need some time?
  • Nicole D replied 11 years ago
I really like these on you, especially rolled up with the sandals.  No doubt about it - keep!
  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago
I haven't read all of the comments but here are my thoughts:
    - The quality will really grow on you.  You can wash these and they get better with age.  And you can always sell them on eBay if you tire of them or consign them; TRs hold their value better than other premium denim precisely because of the quality.
    - The back pockets are not for every one.  Some people regard them as tacky and dated.  In fact, the trend now is for quiet, J Brand type pockets. But I don't mind being a little out of step with mainstream or forum opinion.  Have you tried Brianas which are like Camerons but without the flaps. (More here and here.)  They do have the horseshoe stitching though.
    - I don't hem mine.  I fold them once when wearing them at full length.  At full length, there is too much scrunching on me for my taste.  I fold them twice, or very carefully even three times, for a cropped look.  All depends on my bootie or shoe.  I love the flexibility!
    - If there is extra bagging around the crotch, I have sized down.  I just got a pair of Camerons a few months ago in a pale, pale summer wash (they were a model from last Summer that I tried on but didn't keep because it was in the 90s and I spent my premium denim "budget" on shorts).  I had to size from a 26 to a 25 to get rid of the extra fabric in the crotch.  As you can see from the pic there's still a bit of extra fabric there.  They are now a slim boyfriend and I admit I need to unbutton the waist sometimes, but they fit perfectly everywhere and not having the extra fabric in the crotch makes them look so much sleeker.  Here they are folded twice.  And I'm still playing with the Wilt topper (K/R?  K/R?  and I ordered it in one size bigger to compare!).
    - Overall, I think these are completely age appropriate especially considering your classic toppers.  And I love Angie's comment about the longevity of this look.
    - In sum, I might try one size down in these or if the crotch fabric is not too bad (I can't tell from the pic, too dark) stay with these.  Or, you could try some Brianas for a slightly more quiet pocket.   Check eBay for Brianas too, last year's models are still great and you can save money!  PM me if you have any fit questions, I've tried a lot of Camerons and Brianas on!
  • catgirl replied 11 years ago
To Denise's point, I LOVE flap pockets - good for my booty and for my style!  Don't care if they are in or not.
  • Sveta replied 11 years ago
Suz, I quite like them on you. No worry about the age appropriateness, what a foolish question from an Urban Prince! You really own this look. Period!
As for the fit I would go with the feeling you have in them. Do they make you feel fab? Does this extra fabric bother you? I know that for me does not matter what everybody says if something bothers me I will tend not to wear it very often.
  • Karie replied 11 years ago
First things first - "My thighs are huge" - ???!!!? Where? I enlarged the pics, got out my magnifying glass, "Really? Suz has large thighs? I've got to see!" Humm....Suz, I think you need to go back to elementary school and re-learn the definition of "huge." Nothing on you is even remotely in the vicinity of huge!

That said, I love these jeans on you from the front, and the back pockets are OK - I don't dislike them, but - and maybe it's just the darkness of the photos - they look like the pockets sit a bit low, which I know they are supposed to on BF's, but I think they sit lower than they do on Mo's. How does the pocket placement feel and look IRL? Now that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as I think overall they look fantastic, and I think they are supposed to look that way from the back. The back pockets on my Gap BF's hang low, but the fabric isn't premium denim so it's not so heavy and noticeable.

Have you tried 7 for All Mankind and G-Star Raw? I tried both of those recently and absolutely loved them.

As far as age, well, I'm 52 and I still like what's trendy and fashionable. I figure as long as I'm not wearing a mini skirt and looking like a hoochie mamma, it's all goodie.
  • Marley replied 11 years ago
Well, to be honest - I'm not crazy about them.  The leg fit just looks too big to me.  I'm also not real crazy about the pocket flaps - for one, I think they are sitting too low on you bum, and another, I think the TR logo is just too LOUD!  I have a pair of TRs and I haven't worn them in awhile because of those pocket flaps and logo.  They are just too "busy" for me.  So, I am jaded.  Have you tried other premium denim BFs Suz?  (If you love these, then I say keep!)
  • Thistle replied 11 years ago

I am answering without reading the other posts to try not to sway my opinion.

I think these are trendier than your norm, balanced out by the darker wash. I think these are sassy and chic, both which fit your style. I see style less about age than who you are. I have never been cool and never will be. But, I had someone today tell me how pretty I looked. I will take it. :)

So, I think you have to be true to you. I feel like these mesh with your style, but you have to be comfortable in them. Not just with how comfy they are on, but how you look in them too.

Go with your heart on this one. These have to be a love to keep, but if you love them, they are keepers.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Marley, thank you for your honesty! Since you really love and wear BF jeans (and wear them brilliantly, I may add) your opinion matters enormously. Those pocket flaps may indeed be sitting "too low" on me. Because of my long rise, you know? The whole jean may technically be sitting too low. I am not worried much about the logo because I would tend to cover it with a belt. So that's sort of a non-issue for me. But I have not tried other premium BFs. Just the Gap and Gap original selvege jean.

Karie - agreed. They do sit lower on me than on Mo and that was indeed one of my concerns. And you know, it's just a tough call. Some moments I think it looks totally fine, and other moments, I'm less certain. I have not tried 7 for All or G-Star Raw. Putting them on my list to try for sure.

Denise, I was hoping you would weigh in and your thoughts are so helpful because you are the Cameron expert. I could tell right away about the quality. I haven't tried the Brianas...maybe I will take a look at those, too. It is weird...normally I dislike back pocket detail but I do not mind it on these somehow. I guess I see it as part of the vibe. Whether it works on me, personally, is another matter, but I do not dislike it in the abstract (or on you or Mo or anyone else I have seen it on).

Actually...now that I think about it. The SAs were obviously wearing TR jeans at the store. But not the BF style. And their jeans were tight and had that pocket detail and I did not like it at all. I only like it on a BF jean. Hmmm.

Very interesting that you don't bother to hem. I guess it would help with resale value if it came to that.

The SA thought I needed a size down. So I tried it and I could not even do up the top button. It is so strange -- it felt as if there was an enormous difference between the sizes on me. So there's some possibility that I have an "off" jean...they only had the one in my size. (Or any size, for that matter...they seemed to have one jean in each size, period.) Obviously, this is in Toronto, not Kingston. I got them there.

Sveta, Una - than you for your thoughts!

Glory, it's not so much that I am feeling doubts about the purchase or second guessing. It's more that I want to make sure I'm not crazy to like them. I feel pretty fab in them, although the extra fabric at the crotch was giving me a bit of pause and I was wondering about the length.

ETA: Thistle, just saw your comment and it is very wise. Thank you. And by the way, you are pretty!!

But yes, you are right - "cool" really isn't me; classy sometimes is, and a bit sassy, too. And maybe...smart? Juxtaposition and contrast can be smart.

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago
Isn't that weird, that the 24s were dramatically smaller?  But I believe it, TRs are all sewn very well but by hand.

I took another look at the pictures and I love the way they sit on you!  Front is perfect, and I actually don't see any bunching in the crotch, but like I said, the fabric is dark.

I think these will go great with your black booties too!

I have these, but they have lots of distressing.  I think the 25 would fit well.  It's hard to find TR boyfriend jeans without a lot of distressing or patches such as my Baja Brianas.  If you are OK with the pockets, I think they are very tomboy and cute!  I think they have a very different vibe when loose.  And I have a fitted pair of straight legged TR Billys and I think the patch is very flattering to the back side!  But I do know that in a lot of places the TR pocket is associated with a certain type of hair cut & color, tight tees with no fear of bling look that  goes along with girls riding in lifted trucks.  When I wear these pockets it's almost like I'm not afraid of being uncool, which makes me cooler.  Haha.
  • Angie replied 11 years ago
Hah! The patch pockets on these jeans (which I wore all day) are what I like most about them! And Greg too, actually. They droop, hang low, are baggier on me than on Suz - and I can't help but like the visual effect. Their FULL length seals the deal for me. I like these so much better than my Gap BFs.

This has been a very interesting read. Style is SO subjective :). Suz, you must be more confused than ever :(

It is sooo interesting to see all the varied responses. I think seeing how you feel about them in a day or two will be the key. If you are loving them you will know its time to cut the tags!
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Denise, I am howling with laughter. But the ebay link did not work, you devil!

Angie, I'm actually feeling pretty good! I know that not everybody will like these. Or at least not in a K/R post when they aren't even styled. And I am really glad that people like Marley and Sarah and a few others have spoken up to say they do not care for them. It is one thing if someone who hates BFs, period, announces that she does not like them, but another when somebody who does like BFs says it.

At the end of the day, though, it's about how I feel in them. So I think the real test will be wearing them around the house for a day. That way I will also get to hear hubbie's more considered opinion when he's able to see them in motion.

I agree that being able to wear them full length is very important. I gave my GAP BFs to my daughter because I couldn't wear them full length. I saw some photos where I was trying to do that, and even though I am a few inches shorter than you, I cringed. They were just off a fraction -- but that fraction was enough to really bug me. In a way it was worse than if they were obviously too short!

I can wear the GAP original fit selvege jeans full length, and they are pretty darn good, but they had distressing and I didn't want distressing. I already have a pair of distressed slouchy skinnies, which I adore!!!! Adore. Adore!!! (Can I possibly say that enough times. I love those jeans.) But I only need one pair of distressed jeans. (And anyway, my daughter had an emergency situation when we were travelling and needed a pair of pants, so luckily mine fit her! )

I might try GAP's non distressed selvege jean again. The first ones I tried simply did not fit properly at all -- but knowing GAP's inconsistencies, that could be an anomaly.

In the end, I'm betting that I'll keep these and be really happy with them. As I said to K Can, I really like the contrast between these and my new J Crew toothpick jeans. Those are simple, plain, classic, and slim. These are loose, crazy, funky, and fun. I don't see why they can't live in the same closet.

You already have tons of responses that I am eager to read but I want to give you my first impression. I was prepared to be rough given your description - I was thinking that even if they look great on you, there is your own internal comfort factor to take into account and if they looked inappropriate I wanted to say so.

But I don't have to! I love the fit! The only thing I need to think about is the markings on the flap pockets (the flaps don't bother me in themselves). But they really don't bother me, and, after all, you are showing us with your shirt hiked up, which I am quite sure is not how you will be wearing them. Now I will read the responses and hope you are keeping and consider whether I need a pair myself!

    Try that.

Got it - thank you, Denise!

Yup - mine have this recycled hardware, too - it is a really cool and fun feature.

And yeah, let me join the "too cool to care" brigade.
  • Vicki replied 11 years ago
Suz, I am so thrilled you raised this question, because I have been thinking a lot about your TR Cameron purchase and about Angie's same or similar TR purchase with no stretch and dark wash without distressing.

These ARE expensive premium denim jeans, but you wear this item predominantly in your life (I do, too), so the purchase price will be absorbed in the CPW and happiness factor quotient easily.

My husband came by and said "they look great.  she should keep them, if they are comfortable."  I think the fit is fantastic on you and I like the "boyish" lines and look on you, Suz.  You're a natural for these.

My pondering, hesitation and reflection are all in the way I look at them on my body, because I'm not a big fan of flap pockets.  That's just not my thing.  I'm probably part of Camp Uncool, but I don't care, really.  Who knows; I'll probably change my mind in a month and then want to go buy a pair with flap pockets.  I've never tried them on, so I don't even know how they would look on my body type.  On you, they look really good.

But, do you like the added detail of these jeans?  What drew you to this particular style?  Is your happiness factor high or still sorting itself out?  I like the wash of these jeans.  Yes, I know the price of them is a big "ouch," but denim is part of your life Urban Prince and you deserve premium, no matter what style you end up with.  Denise's suggestion of Brianna (without the flap) is something I would consider along with the Camerons, when I'm ready to replace my J. Brand jeans (which I am underwhelmed with and their bagginess factor).

You are one of my style icons and I look to you for your adventurous shopping spirit.  I find you leading the way for me, at times, and I'm grateful that you are always looking.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Oh, Vicki, please give your husband a big hug for me. I love how our families sometimes get into the act here. I mean even the spectator families. By the way, you would look fantastic in a pair of these!! No question.

I do like the detail on these, yes -- which is weird, because truly it is not usually my "thing." I don't think I would like it if these were my only jeans. But I also bought the very simple J. Crew jeans at the same time. As to how I would like it over time, well, only time would tell, i guess. Maybe I'd get sick of it and maybe I would only grow to love it more!

What drew me to the style? I wanted a cotton BF style jean that was not too baggy and not distressed in a dark (ish) wash. I wanted to be able to wear it full length (unlike the GAP BFs). And I have seen Denise wear her Camerons for at least a year and really, really loved them on her. Although our figures are not the same we are close to the same height and measurements. As well as age. And while our lifestyles are not identical there are some overlaps in terms of our daily needs.

In the summer, with Denise as my inspiration, I pulled out my slouchy skinnies with distressing from BR that I hadn't been wearing for a while due to fears that I would be perceived as mutton dressed as lamb. And I was amazed at how much I really liked them. No, loved them. I still love them, but there are times when a girl does not want distressing, you know?

Then, when Angie bought a pair of the Camerons, it made me think about them again. I figure if Angie is willing to lay down cash on these, there is some likelihood that the style will last for a couple of years and that she considers the quality high. I have never been sorry about an Angie recommended purchase before. I may not always buy what she recommends, but when I have decided to keep one of her recommended items, I have loved it.

So that, in the end, was what drew me to them. Because we know that Angie is rarely wrong!
  • Marley replied 11 years ago
Suz - I just got finished reading all of the responses.  Wow!  Bet you're kind of sorry that you posted the question, huh????  :-)  I just want to add, that the bottom line is whether or not you love them?  It doesn't really matter if I or anyone else isn't crazy about them.  If I thought they were awful, I would have told you that - well, maybe not used the word "awful" but I would have tried to kindly get the point across.  But, I don't feel that way about these - AND - Angie loves them and thinks they would really add aLOT to your style/wardrobe!  So, I say - if YOU love them, then Keep them, and enjoy!  (And, in the meantime, I think I'll get out my TRs again and see how I feel about them this year!  Who knows, maybe I'll welcome them back into my jeans "rotation!")
  • Gaylene replied 11 years ago

I'll echo Marley. It seems that you really love these jeans, so whether or not others like them is really irrelevant.

My only reason for adding another comment is because you seem concerned about the cost. One of the unspoken issues around age-appropriate fashion is that what seems fine today might be borderline, or even uncomfortable, in a year or two, especially if it is outside your normal style. These jeans definitely have a "cool" factor, but that also might affect their longevity and the ability to be worn as part of a dressy casual capsule in order to justify the cost.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago
Hey Suz, for you I am posting these awful pictures of me in my Camerons.  They are not the same ones - I got the ones Mo posted, with stretch, and had to size down 2 sizes, and they are still huge on me.  I can pull them off EASIlLY without unbuttoning.  And they are probably not even flattering.  But I love them for the same reason I perversely love anything that makes me feel like a skater boy. :)

So here you go. Last picture literally below my hips (not how I wear them, just to show how big they really are on me!).
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Una, thank you so much for the visuals! So it's obvious that the way these look will depend to a large extent (haha) on the way we look, individually...we are talking about relationship of hip width to bum size to rise and that is so individual. Got it. It's all a question of whether I like the way they fall on me.

I feel no urge to look like a skater boy, but I do love a bit of bagginess and slouch in a pant, especially a jean.

Gaylene, I am glad you weighed in. And that is an important consideration when considering CPW. I don't think of these as my "smart casual" jeans, actually. Despite the fact that they are more expensive than any other jeans I've ever owned I would in fact consider them part of my CASUAL-casual capsule. In other words, these jeans would the ones I would reach for for my work-at-home days. I might also wear them to the pub with a friend or with hubby, or on a writing retreat in the mountains, or (possibly) on a weekend in the city hanging out with friends. And maybe shopping. I would not wear them for readings, presentations, visits to mother, etc.

Do I love them? Hmmm. Not sure. I think if I loved them I would not have posted a K/R.  I like them, and wonder if I would grow to love them. Only a day of wearing will prove it.
  • replied 11 years ago
They look great. The only negative is that I think there is too much material at the fold. Would you be altering the length? You might need a trendier top too, maybe something more boxy or flow-y (Silk tee, oversized pocket tee, blouse???) to make the look 100% intentional. IMO.

Side note: I am secretly waiting for the time when all of us stop bagging out our clothes. I am in mourn of tailored :(
  • replied 11 years ago
Wow! I can't believe how much I have learned from one thread here on the forum...I would love to see pictures of these jeans with your classic pieces that Angie talked about to see how they play in your closet.

This is exactly why I can't calculate CPW on anything. I wouldn't ever buy anything that was expensive because I'd be too worried about getting the cost per wear down. Just a personality thing I guess.
  • Mona replied 11 years ago
I have been missing on all the fun on the forum lately but I am so glad I found this thread. So informative. I personally am not a big fan of low pockets on jeans, Suz. but other than pockets, I really like these on you. Have you made the decision yet?
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
No decision yet, Mona. I am going to wear them for a day around the house and see how they feel to me.

Mtgirl, I can understand your hesitation about buying an expensive item. I think when it's something that we wear about 300 days a year (for me, that would be jeans) it's pretty straightforward, though. True, I won't wear the same pair of jeans 300 days a year, but I don't have a lot of pairs -- I typically keep one jean of each cut in my wardrobe, so I'll have one BF jean, one legging jean for tucking into boots, one skinny, one bootcut. And one or two coloured options. Anyway, even if I were to wear these an average of once per week my CPW would be less than $5 within a year and I would probably be wearing them more than that. And of course I would be wearing them for longer than a year.

I used to blanch at the high cost of premium denim, and if I worked in an office and could only wear it once a week, I probably would still stay away from it on my budget. But if you look at it as my workwear (which it is) it becomes an entirely different proposition.

I can try to snap some pics with tops for a sense of how they would look styled. I purposely did not style these for the photos because I knew I would get a wider variety of responses this way. Once we've styled the item up, it will probably look pretty good, regardless.

Zap, it will make you happy to know I also bought a pair of tailored jeans at the same time. No K/R on those because I am keeping! And yes, the jeans need to be styled to look intentional. In my case maybe not so much with flowy tees.

Good morning Suz! Ringing back in as I have found the words to describe what I am feeling when I see these on you. Let me start by saying I QUITE like the fit and the lower placement of the rear patch pockets I think also works. To me the wiskering and steampressed wrinkles (esp at the back of the knee) feel contrived. When I see your posts I feel you have achieved that effortlessly chic look marvelously and so anything contrived feels off for me when I think of *your* style. With that said... If you cut the tags you will LIVE in these jeans I feel. And they will wash and being 100% cotton they will conform to your body relatively quickly and then... well effortlessly trendy chic will follow :) But yes, wearing them for a day will be the best start to know how they will serve you.
  • Vix replied 11 years ago
    Hi Suz --

Lots of interesting give-and-take on these; of course how you feel in them matters most.

I have purchased items, spendy and otherwise, that have me marveling "oh I don't know if this is perfect for [age, lifestyle, body shape] but I want to keeeeeeep" -- and then I've purchased ones where I just couldn't *quite* fall in love no matter how much my head said "this is just what you said you wanted/needed" and was glad to return. In fact I have one of the tags-on latter in my closet, cough cough.

Reading the lines and in-betweeen, I can't say I have a sense of which side you're on....

My .02: I love them from the front but not the back -- if you could find a pair/size that fits more like Mo's rear/back thigh view I'd be 100% "keep."

[But then I'm always encouraging the man in my life to wear jeans he can't stuff a couple of cats into, so there's that.]

    Good luck with the decision-making!
  • annaj replied 11 years ago
I love them! I don't think they are too young for you at all - funky, modern jeans with more classic tops is a perfect combination IMO.

I used to be a $20 Kmart jeans girl until I tried on my first pair of G Star Raw jeans. I paid full price (over $200) and have never looked back. I now buy expensive jeans (I now wait for sales so they are around half price) and cheaper tops (mostly). It works for me and I think helps keep my look current.

    Enjoy I say!!
