K/R: Cobalt mesh sleeve sweater and 2 sandals

So, I've been making up for not shopping in London. In fact, what with this, that, and the other, I've been on a regular shop-a-thon.

You saw my off-white Gap mesh sleeve sweater last week. It does stretch out with wear, as others have said, but I figure I can get two wears before wash, and that is okay. Now it's time to consult about the cobalt. Keep or return?

Funny, Sveta mentioned that this colour did not seem intense or saturated enough to her. I am worried it might be too intense for me.

It is very close in colour to my Vince Camuto tube midi skirt, so in some of the photos I am showing them together. IRL the colour values are even closer than they appear here. Okay to wear together, or not?

And now the footwear. I have temporarily given up the search for actual shoes. True to typical form, given our current weather patterns it looks as if I would only have six or eight days in which to wear shoes anyway! The way things are going, it will be downright cold for another couple of weeks and then WHAM, we will be straight into summer.

I buy sandals every year. I usually buy several pair. I have been thinking about this. Given that I only wear them for three months of the year, am I buying for a fantasy life?

But no...because I wear almost nothing else for those three months. None of my sandals are orphans (if they work out, I mean, in terms of comfort). And I'm tough on them (much more so than I am on my other footwear) so I pretty much have to buy new each year. I have two pairs that are still usable from last year; both are black.

Up for review: Clark's Pitchmint. These are billed as "gold" but I don't know as I would call them that. They were extremely reasonable in price from The Bay (on sale last week when I bought and with an extra discount even less). Pros: they are Clark's, so quite comfortable, and I think they work with jeans and pants. Cons: they are a tiny bit big (no half-sizes available) and are they too clunky?

Next is Sam Edelman Sutton. These ones (despite being the same size as my Pettys) may be a tiny bit small -- but I think the next half size will be too big -- the strap up top is already loose for me (and not adjustable). These are a bit dressier and more refined; I have a wardrobe hole for something like this because otherwise, all my sandals are very casual, except for one flat black pair that can swing both ways.

Note that I can keep both.

Would love your thoughts, and thank you for reading this far!

8-12: Sutton
13: Dressing up the cobalt with my version of a floral jacket (from BR two years ago, in fact).
14: Dressing down the cobalt with ON denim jacket and Reports

I think both work but for max comfort I would go with the clarks.  They are a nice platinum color...

but I love the sam edelmans, so if you can get a perfect fit they are more elegant to my eye....I ordered something very similar!
  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
My goodness Suz - you are GORGEOUS!!! Seriously...do you have ANY idea how stunning you look???

I don't find the cobalt sweater too intense on you at all. I think it's brilliant and beautiful. It looks amazing with both the white jeans and the VC skirt. I can see these combinations getting tons of use and wear. It also looks great with the Leiths and now I need to try my grey mesh sleeve sweater with my Leith copycats.

As for the sandals - this is a tough one. I know the comfort of Clarks and like you, live in my sandals from the end of May until September. Comfort is important. I don't find them too clunky and I really like the color. I know my feet swell in the summer so am wondering if that possible half size too big will be non existent once the heat comes?

I absolutely ADORE the look of the SE sandals. I think they are beautiful as a sandal and beautiful on your foot. With the top strap being a bit loose, does it rub on the top of your foot at all with walking? If they are comfortable, I vote for keep. I do think they fill a dressier sandal capsule.
  • catgirl replied 11 years ago
I adore the sweater on you!  It's the same intensity as fuchsia on you to my eye, so not too much at all.

Will leave the footwear questions to others as I'm terrible with this kind of shoe, so out of my range!
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Shannon, thank you - you are such a sweetheart. And I can't wait to see your copycat look with the sweater! My hubby and I have a lot of "date nights" at home -- we make a special supper on Friday or Saturday night if our daughter is busy and just enjoy it on our own. And I think this is a perfect look for those kinds of evenings. Almost like loungewear (and as comfy) but a little bit dressy, too --- especially if you added a necklace like the pretty one you wore today.

Re the Clark's - I had exactly the same wonder. I know my feet do swell. I think that might be just the right difference. But it makes me wonder if I should try the half size up in the Edelman's. You can get them at the Bay, by the way...not that I'm enabling.....
  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
It wouldn't hurt to try the next size up on the SE's - that way you would know for sure.

Yes, I saw them at The Bay last time I was there. They are beautiful. I'd love it if The Bay got the SE silver laser cut oxfords I posted earlier...but I digress...
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
    Oh, I know!!!!

I wonder if they have them at the Toronto store...at the flagship store they get a ton of stuff you never see anywhere else, or online.
  • Astrid replied 11 years ago
I love the sweater on you, the color is absolutely stunning! I like the look of the Clarks and they look comfortable to me. The SE sandals look like they could fill the dressier sandal capsule, but they don't look as comfortable to me. From the front it looks like the front strap is a bit too tight.
  • sarah replied 11 years ago
Suz, I ended up purchasing the cobalt sweater before my trip and wore it several times. I also was thinking, "whoa, this is a lot of color for me", but somehow paired with white it doesn't feel that way. I don't know how to make sense of that, but there you have it. I think it's stunning on you and I would keep it.

I know exactly what you mean about sandals. I wear them all summer long as well (I think our climates are quite similar) - 3 months of the year is NOT a fantasy.

I like both pairs and would keep them both, but your poor toes do look a bit pinched in the SE's. I bought Clark wedges last summer and wore them to death and plan to wear them to their second death this summer. I don't think you can go wrong.
  • texstyle replied 11 years ago
The sweater is perfect in every way, color, fitting in with the other items, and in style. You look amazing in it and I would KEEP.
  • Makrame replied 11 years ago
The sweater looks great on you!  Paired with the white bottoms it looks great but I especially like it with the skirt - a nice juxtaposition of a fitted skirt and a voluminous top.

Beautiful sandals - I like the looks of both but am not sure which are the most comfortable for you.
  • Angie replied 11 years ago
If it were PC for me to wolf whistle, I would :)

I LOVE IT ALL. A hundred thumbs up, Suz! Keep both pairs of sandals! Versatile and flattering - one a little dressier than the other. Perfect!

Special shout outs to #1, #3 and #15 - I am a true minimalist, and those outfits are faint-worthy.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Thank you all - very sage words. I have ordered the SE's a half size larger to compare. Returns are free to the store so what the heck. Might as well see which ones feel better.

Sarah, it's really encouraging to know that you enjoyed wearing the cobalt sweater. Did it stretch much for you on the trip?
  • Angie replied 11 years ago
We posted at the same time. HAHAHAHAHA!!!
  • sarah replied 11 years ago
Suz - I didn't notice that it stretched particularly badly, actually. And I didn't wash it on the trip (I think I wore it 3x).
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Thank you, Angie!! You are funny as well as kind. And Sarah, it's interesting. Some of us have had stretching issues and others not with this sweater. Very much the way some had pilling and some did not with the cable knit sweater in the winter. Ah, the Gap. Love 'em and hate 'em.
  • sarah replied 11 years ago
Well, my navy GAP sweater pills terribly, while the ivory one doesn't! Go figure.

Fingers crossed that your sweater doesn't stretch...
  • Vicki replied 11 years ago
How amazing is it that your two cobalts match so well and were meant for each other!  As Una said, this color loves you as much as fuchsia.  I'm still hearing Angie's whistle in my ears!  :)

It seems like you live in sandals when the weather is cooperating, so THIS is your real life, not a fantasy.  I'm particularly fond of the SE's for their beauty and simplicity.
  • unfrumped replied 11 years ago
Love the cobalt sweater! You look fantastic. It does not look too intense in these photos, and it's superb with white bottoms. So I don't see any problem at all. I do find sometimes an intense color makes me look washed out and I may nix it if after trying it in several types of light I still don't think it's fab. But unless you are seeing that yourself, I think the combo of the hi-low and color and fit are hard to beat, so keep! Plus, the cobalt and white also work with taupe, or some versions thereof, anyway.

The sandals both look good. The nude-type colors add some refinement even in the chunkier sole, so that to me is a good thing to look for. Only you can do the fit test, and if you think there's a better fit, then wait, but if it's a minor detail, well, I find it hard to get exact fit in every area so aim for the ones that either affect comfort (blisters, etc) or if it's obvious that there's a big gap or something.

One of my epiphanies is changing my view on which items for me may be good to have in various iterations,  that might not come under the typical "lists" of must-haves. For example, a lot of gals have several black jackets--dressy, cropped, long &lean, and so on--since we all know proportions with different bottoms are affected.

My aha moment is that while I used to gravitate to having a lot of  black jackets,   I thought a bright jacket would need to be a solitary wardrobe item splurge. But since black is getting more difficult to wear near my face, I am starting to see how useful it can be to have several fuchsia/pink/raspberry toppers--similar idea--jean jacket,  dressy/short for dresses, casual knit blazer--I can use all of these variations. It's just substituting a signature color or happy color for a neutral.

Same for nude shoes of several types--it is not really possible for me to have a single style or heel height that works equally well with pants, shorts/clamdiggers, &  dressy dresses, and yet this color or color range of footwear is extremely versatile and makes outfit creation easy.

So for your sandals I agree that, assuming you identify the features, you could easily use 2 or 3 pairs of nude sandals if you wear them regularly. I think it's most useful for them to differ in some key distinguishing features so that you have at least 2 areas covered--pants/jeans and more dressy outfits , or whatever are 2 or 3 main "event" capsules you need covered.
  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago
I love your cobalt purchases! the sweater paired with the skirt totally works and seems very fresh and fun to me. almost a 2 piece dress feel.... now shoes. I like the edeleman more but see what you mean about the top strap non adjustibility. I think trying the size up makes sense b/c keeping the not quite right size leads to orphans in my exp. The clarks -- I cant believe they are comfortable -- they look so high! They do have a less refined vibe and certainly think I personally prefer the outfits you showed with the more polished looking edelmans. I like the clarks for casual summer outfits, but I know i would personally struggle with a heel this high for my casual looks. If you do wear a higher heel (but I dont think you do in the winter at least?) for casual outfits, I think they are great for that purpose.
  • Carole replied 11 years ago
Wow! How do you manage to find the perfect clothes for your body, lifestyle, wardrobe, capsules etc. etc. Absolute love for everything. It's especially wonderful that the cobalt sweater looks so amazing with the skirt you have score! I love the second pair of sandals, very chic/classy. But I love the first pair, too, for your casual days. I say keep everything!
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Thanks for all your thoughts. I can't believe the sage advice a person can get here.

Sarah, you're right that I don't usually wear heels. But flats are actually far worse for me, unless they have a special athletic sole or something. My ideal sweet spot for a shoe is somewhere between 2 and 2.5 inches. I can go up to 3 inches in a bootie or heel, no higher. These are about 3 inches. But they are a wedge, and that actually makes them feel like no heel at all. I wouldn't wear them if I were running around on a playground chasing a toddler, but my (non-gear) casual life tends to be walking around town now that my daughter is 13. So I think they'd be fine for that.

Unfrumped, I am with you on multiples of anything raspberry, berry, fuchsia...non-black!! Or nude, I guess.

Vicki, you are so sweet. You would look awfully great in this cobalt yourself. Just sayin'.
  • Nicole D replied 11 years ago
Love that cobalt sweater!  Looks marvelous with jeans and with the blue skirt.  I much prefer the SE sandals.  More trendy and refined.  But I am concerned about the strap...I tried a pair of SE sandals this year an they fit really badly - way too short and narrow, weird because their boots are generous.  THey are pretty different - maybe you could use both?
  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago
Sounds like the clarks will be a great casual shoe for you then! I see both shoes filling different needs... what a score!
  • Thistle replied 11 years ago
Love the sweater on you. The color looks different than the one Sveta posted. Yours looks true cobalt, so beautiful, and a definite keeper!

I like both sandals, and if you have room for both, I would keep. Only you know about the fit, though. If there is any doubt, Iwould hold out. Uncomfortable feet are fussy feet!
  • Eliza replied 11 years ago
Suz- Love you in cobalt and may I say that those white jeans are simply perfection on you. The sweater looks great.  I love the SE sandals- they reflect a major trend this season. The other ones don't feel as fresh to me, but if they each serve different purposes and are comfortable for their intended use, then go for it. I own a lot of shoes that I like, but chose over even more appealing ones because I am a on a mission to harbor no further delusions about the comfort level that my feet require. Love the SE booties with cobalt and I might not have tried that without your example.  YLF, as always.
  • Lyn D. replied 11 years ago
I think I would lean towards the S.E. and it could be dressed up or down if you decided against the Clarks.
It might be worth trying the size up- if only for peace of mind that you have chosen the best fit.
Always love a blue sweater like this Suz, looks FAB!
  • Mona replied 11 years ago
Love the cobalt sweater, Suz! I hope it does not stretch as much as the other one. As for sandals, if you are sure you will use both of them enough  why not get both? Also, I agree that since you didn't buy many things from London, you are buying them now.
I am very much like you on this. Since I am not a natural shopper, I have to have a lot of time on my hands to try different things and feel comfortable before I make my final decision.
  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago
I love how you've styled this sweater. It is definitely a keeper. I especially love #1 (I can copy that!) #8, 10, 13, 15, I like the SE's more than the Clark's sandal. I have a preference for sleek polished footwear. The Clark's sandal looks clunky to my eye. But if comfort is what you need I think they are nondescript enough to go unnoticed.
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
Good grief this cobalt shade is gorgeous for you Suz!! Both sandals look nice, but I do prefer the SE Suttons (if the size works out).
  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago
You've had great feedback, already, Suz, but I wanted to chime in and say --- absolutely, yes!  Love these looks, and both sandals.  The only question I have is do you want both to be in nude?  The answer may well be, "sure," I just know that I"m mulling this over myself at the moment ---- do I want more color in my summer shoes, or the elegant, leg lengthening neutral?
  • Karie replied 11 years ago
Well, I don't have much to add except to say that you look FABULOUS! In every picture! I love the top, love every way you've paired it, and the shoes are beautiful - my favs are the SE's.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Beth Ann, that's a question I have, too. A bright sandal could be really fun. Except I bought one last year and almost never wore it. Largely because it wasn't as comfortable as I expected it to be or as flattering....but still. I am a bit wary now. My main concern with the Clark's is clunkiness, really. Hmmm. Still thinking on those.
  • hedgiehog replied 11 years ago
Suz, sorry I'm late chiming in.....the cobalt looks amazing on you. I love how you paired it with white, very fresh for spring and summer.  Is this the same sweater Sveta posted? Yours looks like true cobalt. FWIW, I like both pairs o shoes. One is chunkier and more casual and the other is a dressier sandal. They are both versatile because of colour and they both elongate the line of the leg. I vote keep both. :)
  • Jaime replied 11 years ago
Ok I restrained myself and read the comments first, but I then returned to my first impulse, which was to look at each picture and scream at screen Suz KEEP! The cobalt blue sweater looks wonderful on you and I like both sandals too. The clarks look a bit more comfortable for moving around and the SE's a bit more dressy for different events but they both truly look fab on you. And all the cobalt is incredible on you with the white jeans and the skirt. So KEEP!
  • Sveta replied 11 years ago
Suz, this blue color is incredible on you - not too intense at all. You really come alive in this color. Actually this is not that strange that this color suits you perfectly but just 'meh' for me as out coloring is so different.
Saying that I have decided to return all Gap sweaters. I cannot stand them being stretched out. I pulled on the hem a couple of times and it was noticeably stretched - too much for my liking. :-(
I like both pairs of sandals and if you live in the summer it makes perfect sense to stock up - after all 3 months is 1/4 of the year - the whole season.
I looked at those SE sandals and was afraid the foot will slip too far in the front while walking because the toe opening is quite big. But if the are comfortable to walk in than keep for sure!
  • Joy replied 11 years ago
Cobalt sweater...Keep and get a backup while you can.  Yes, it looks good with  the VC skirt.
Sandals...I like the SEs best but only if they will be comfortable.
  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago
Whoa! That cobalt would be so much color for me, too! But it looks so good on you, I think bolder colours are waisting their force (or look the most appropiate for us blondes) when  paired with some crisp whites-like you did so well here.
I wear today a bold fuchsia-purpleish denim jacket(see my post in Movie Posters Challenge/2 if interrested) and I was thinking about it, the same, at first. Then, it felt quite right with some whites and greys.
Love both your sandals, pls. keep all the lot!
ETA: I initially tought you are going to post this for Ornella's challenge day2(Stars War), as find it perfectly appropiate for that! :-))
  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago
Coming in late here (again). Keep the cobalt sweater, it looks amazing. But I wouldn't pair it with the skirt because of the cut: How would it look tucked? Although pic 14 is interesting and would certainly work. I love both sandals, the Suttons being my favourite, but won't they hurt your feet if they are too small? Pay attention to that bottom top strap. The Clarks: I have a similar pair from last year (with denim/leather on top instead of silver), wore them all summer. Not clunky at all, and great for wearing shorts, ankle pants or sporty skirts. But they will absolutely stretch. If they are already too big, that may be an issue. I asked a cobbler if it could be fixed but they said no. I ended up padding the soles of mine with insoles and it made it better... however I am not sure if they will be wearable this year! When they are too big, they impede your step, forcing you to walk a certain way, (subtle, but still), which cancels out any benefit you have from them being "Clarks".

  • Scarlet replied 11 years ago
That is a really pretty shade of blue. I really like both sandals. Even though they have ankle straps they don't break up your leg line, which is a major win in my book. I hope that the sizing works out for you.
  • Suz replied 11 years ago
Krish, my thoughts exactly...the back strap is also a bit loose on me. That might be helped with some velcro replacement. Well, I still have a few days to consider and have ordered a size up on the Pettys for comparison. Thank you all again.

Lyn - - I thought the same about the Star Wars! You will see soon. Off to check out your fuchsia!
  • Peri replied 11 years ago
You don't need this answer, but hi!

Cobalt is one of my favorite colors, so this would be a no brainer for me!  It looks beautiful. I'm already past sweater weather and have other priorities or I'd be really tempted.
