No Repeat November: The Review (Pic heavy, with special "Angie" outtake)

Here's the complete set of outfits at once. I apologize for boring you all to tears, please do not feel a need to comment about the outfits themselves -- you've already seen them and the document is mainly for my own purposes. I'm going to post what I learned and some thoughts in a separate thread. For now, just the inventory.

In my current fall/winter rotation, not counting special occasion wear, footwear, coats, gear, sleepwear, and layering bits that don't stand on their own, I have 50 items. (Slightly more than my original count a few weeks ago - I had left out a few transitional items that I decided to count because I actually wore them this month.)

Here's the breakdown of what is in the closet, and what I actually wore:

Knit tops:  14   (wore all 14 at least once, most repeated)
Long sleeved shirts: 13 - (wore 7 at least once)
Skirts: 3   (wore 1)
Dresses: 4  (wore 3)
Pants (not denim): 5   - (wore all 5 at least once)
Jeans: 7 (wore 6, most repeated)
Jackets: 4 (wore 4)

Tall boots  — 2 (plus one old pair for rain only) (wore 2)
Booties: 6 (wore 5…one unworn is dressy)

Of the unworn or seldom worn items, most are transitional in nature. For example, it might seem as if I have too many long sleeved button up shirts. And perhaps I do. But I don't like to layer my crisp shirts very often under a sweater. And I do like to wear knits on my work at home days. So that means those shirts tend to be used as stand alone items in my transitional seasons more than they are worn in cooler temps. The jeans I didn't wear were my boot cuts, due to the change in weather. The dress I didn't wear was my dressiest non formal dress. The booties I didn't wear are the dressiest ones. The sweaters I wore least were my warmest ones (we are just moving into the colder days now). So there were good reasons not to wear what I didn't wear, or to wear it less often.

I didn't have any trouble coming up with outfits. I didn't have laundry log jams. I didn't feel at wit's end attempting new combinations. I did, of course, repeat items, some multiple times.

Most worn items include:

Zara navy booties
Leopard belt
Munro cranberry booties
BR floral scarf (cranberry, fuchsia, navy tones)
J. Crew toothpick jeans  (7 wears)

I conclude from this that I have the right number of clothes for a month of non-repeated outfits. IF that is a goal...  :)

Bonus shots of the cute hotel I got to stay in when I went to give my presentation/ workshop -- and the restaurant right down the road! :)

Further reflections to follow.

Love to read your reflections, Suz! I think you have a very functional wardrobe which also looks great.
It is fun to see your hotel room and Angie's restaurant of course!

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Suz, you are a fashion rock star! I love, love, love those white jeans on you. The Equipment kitty shirt, the SE Petty booties, the leopard belt - it's all divine. And the pattern mixing in #33, oh don't get me started - it's perfection. And the dotty sweater in #5 and #38 - I'm about to faint - (wait, I can't, I don't have a crash helmet)!
Seriously, you have a fantastic sense of style and your wardrobe is excellent (and so is that hotel room)!

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Wow what a good morning treat! Those booties are just fabulous aren't they? The fit of your jeans and jackets is stupendous! I won't pick favorites - a bit too much Chanukah socializing has sapped me of my powers of early morning concentration, but I eagerly look forward to the further reflections and will be giving these outfits a second (and third) look.

What a great catalogue of outfits! I still don't know how you do it!

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Love the 'Angie' outtake. You have such great style.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

You have a fabulous wardrobe and look urban yet approachable.  I can't pick favorites because you look wonderful in everything.  Now off to find out if you have posted your musings yet.

What a great month!  This makes me want to eventually own more sweater pull-overs.  :)  You make them look great.

  • Gigi replied 10 years ago

    This is really inspiring, Suz!

One of the things I am noticing in being able to see all of these outfits at once is that you seem to be very picky when it comes to fit. Everything appears to fit perfectly and have the perfect length. I think that makes SUCH a difference. And I know it takes a long time to find that perfect fit, but these pictures show me that it's worth taking the time and not settling.

I had to start a new wardrobe almost from scratch this past year (I used to be a very minimalist dresser and so had very, very few items in my wardrobe)--just like you--and I have found that early on, I was not picky enough when it came to fit. I am now getting better about it, knowing that eventually, the right piece will come along!

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

These are all plonk worthy outfits!!! I love all of them and I am marking this as my favorite! I am going to come back to this post every time for inspiration. Incredible round up and thanks for doing this!

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

First, let me say that in picture 17 which is close up and features natural light, you look exactly 30 years old.  Having you been lying about your age this whole time?  WHAT is your secret?!?  (I like to think that it's having fun with fashion.)

I am so happy to see this thread because I have missed many of these!  I know the point of this thread is not to comment on the outfits, but I can't help it.  Comment:  1, 11, 13, 23, 34, and 37 all have a sleek, chic and minimal thing going on that is so right on you.  Seriously I want to go out, cut my hair and change out my wardrobe so I can look just like you do in these clean and sophisticated outfits.  31, 32 and 36 share this sleek & chic thing with a bit more playfulness but are still coming from the same style family tree.  It is this direction that seems so very "you," from what I know of you!

I am looking your pics and appreciating all the hard work that goes into creating such lovely well put together outfits!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thank you all so much - you are really sweet. And smart.

Denise, thank you for your compliments. My secret is a lousy camera! It erases lines like magic. I recommend it to every woman over 40. But having fun with fashion also helps!   :)

Denise, I also completely agree with your comments about my style. The ones you mentioned are the ones I like best and that feel most "me." So that is pretty clearly a direction I need to go. But, in my climate, where layering is pretty much required, it's a bit tricky to manage at times. I need to take more lessons from Angie.

Gigi, thank you for your remarks about fit. I am really picky about fit, and have sent back several beloved items this fall because the fit wasn't right. Most things don't fit perfectly off the rack. I have shorter than average legs and arms,  so I almost always need to get pants hemmed and jacket sleeves hemmed as well. I factor the cost in when I'm considering an item and also investigate it thoroughly to see if hemming is going to be possible. I try to ignore the number on tags -- I have jeans in a range of 4 different sizes (all of which fit right now.) I tend to prefer a slightly fluid fit (except for things like leggings, obviously). So if something is pulling I won't buy it.

I think it's more than fit, though. I've made a really thorough study since joining YLF of which CUTS are likely to work of my body type. And so I automatically gravitate to those kinds of items now when I am shopping. It rules out quite a lot and makes choosing easier.

I'm eagerly awaiting your post on thoughts from the challenge!

  • E replied 10 years ago

Fab summary & it was so fun getting to click through all of these in one go! Can't wait to see more of your reflections. :)

I almost never repeat an outfit entirely, so for me I think I'd need to do the opposite challenge: somehow make up rules for a month of less remixing and more repeating. Everyone seems to have learned so much from this one that I'm tempted!

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

OMG, Suz! YLmorethanF in all of these! I loved this post, was not boring at all-as your outfits are all so  so gorgeous! I esp loved the nr. 6,7,11,13, 38, 40, 43, but Nr 37 was my outstandingly fave! You have such a great wardrobe, keep it wearing the heck out of it! Thanx for posting!

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

A great recap, I think it is very helpful to view a month at a time, it really let's you see how cohesive your wardrobe is or isn't.  You have a great base of dark neutrals in many of your outfits (excluding the white of course) and this makes remixing easy to do.  And the berries that pop up are gorgeous on you and a refreshing change from the darker colors.

  • replied 10 years ago

Suz, you have such variety here that I clicked halfway through your pictures the second time before I realized that I had passed the end! You have such wonderful clothes and I am enjoying the minimal look too--all though I'm all about the practicality of layering. The vitality of your colors and patterns a the perfect match for your personality, which shines through in every picture. I agree with Denise that you are looking younger, hipper and fit-er with each passing day! Pass whatever you're drinking my way!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Suz:  Cheers for a well-working wardrobe!

For so long, I thought if only I was thin enough, or had enough money to buy perfect statement pieces, I would be happy in my closet.

Your challenge month is proof that ensemble players --- well trained players who know how to make music with others, are by far the most important elements in the closet.  Your looks have plenty of interest -- color, pattern, texture, shine and shape, but they aren't competing with each other.  This well rehearsed orchestra allows you to look fab every day -- not just "when the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars."

Were you craving an item, a color, or a silhouette that isn't represented here?

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

What a treat to see a full month of your outfits! So cohesive, and every one a winner. I specially liked #40 – from all its textures, proportions and sublime color mixing to your smile, hair and pose, you look like you are indeed having fun (and the thumb-holes in the jacket just nailed it for me – a sporty touch!).  I'm in line waiting for your further musings. I always learn a lot from your posts – thank you!

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I still don't know what exactly to write on this post. Stunning, all of it. I keep scrolling through all photos and everything is in divine harmony. Each outfit is stellar for its own reason.

Basically, I think I have to categorise this one as nightmare thread because it puts me in this state of extreme impatience and frustration that there are not enough occasions in my life (or days in the season for that matter) to copy every single outfit from it.

  • replied 10 years ago

I agree with Gracie... what a treat! I've beeen absent a fair bit from the forum lately due to time constraints and I've struggled to keep up with all but the bare minimum. This is therefore my first proper look at your no repeat November and I'm blown away Suz. I see lots of lovely touches of white, some fab scarves, lovely subtle layering, great dresses, fab flared trousers ad gorgeous muted plumbs with navy, grey and taupe. I think you have a wardrobe to be proud of Suz. Very impressive :)

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Hey Suz... a bit late to this party, I saw you'd posted when I had no time to look at it properly, nor comment, so here I am.  At work, with a few minutes, LOL.

Seeing a month of your outfits all in one place is a treat.  It truly is.  It tells a story of your style, that is not always evident in one photo.  Which is interesting - I remember a while back there was a debate over "one photo or multiples" in one thread, and I now see that both serve different, valuable purposes.

Seeing a month of you has also motivated me to remember to take that extra time to worry about fit, and flexibility, when shopping.  Thanks for doing this...

  • AnnieMouse replied 10 years ago

Oh! You look so adorable! You are such an inspiration - your style is aspirational to me, and no mistake.

  • viva replied 10 years ago

I know I am not the only one, but I want to be you, Suz. I work at home and you have raised the bar. So, so high.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Wow Suz!  So glad that I looked up this thread!  I missed some of your WIWs from last month and its so much fun to see them all in one place.  You have really become a pro in developing a wardrobe that is uniquely you - love your sleek, modern style!  My favorites here are 1, 7, 8 (sweater twin!,) 11, 13, 17, and 32 - but, there isn't any here that I don't really, really like!  Now, I've got to look up your thread on what you learned by going through this process!  Thanks for posting!

  • Laura replied 10 years ago

Amazing record of your month and you can do no wrong in any of these outfits. And a very cute hotel, you're right!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

#18 is hilarious. Thanks for sharing.

You look fabulous and have killer style. xo
