Suz/NAS: the update

Of course you knew I'd head back to the flagship one more time before leaving Seattle, right? Hehehehe....

I spent an hour in the store on my own without the Shopping Goddess, and what a fascinating experience!

First, now that I've done it both ways, I'm convinced: If I had gone there alone in the first place, without having spent time at the sale with her, I'm not sure I'd have walked away with anything. Granted, by yesterday, things were very picked over. It is late in the early access period, and nothing had been re-stocked yet. Even in a very well maintained store (we are not talking Zara here!) it was difficult to find the gems amid the chalk dust.

Undaunted, I kept going, because I actually had a few errands to run. There was a small pull in my 1-State blazer that we had not noticed. The SA suggested she take it to alterations and it was a quick fix. Yay!

Also, I'd decided to return the very cool but not-quite-right moto trench. The no-2-way zip thing was a bit of a deal breaker for me, I'm afraid, and also, the coat wasn't quite what I needed, which was basically a piece of good-looking and slightly more stylish gear to wear for walks in the woods but also into town when weather conditions demand.

Returns made, I scoured the aisles for a few more items I'd been seeking. Lo and behold, I came upon this Pendleton raincoat with a lovely Black Watch lining. Tried it on -- it fits a bit small (rare for Pendleton, I am guessing). Or at least I took a S rather than an XS and the reason was my hips and shoulders. In any case, I quite liked it, so I held onto it until Angie could take a look at it and approve. (You would not believe how stinking cute she looked in this coat -- the SAs were falling all over themselves trying to get her to buy it. An XS was a bit loose but a decent fit on her.)

What's really nice about this coat is the princess seaming in the back -- it gives you a bit of waist definition without any cinching. There are lots of pockets. It is fully waterproof with taped seams, beautifully finished with that gorgeous cozy lining and lined pockets, the hood is not too large—it's altogether a high quality product at only $40 more than the first coat, so I exchanged the moto for this.

I got it in the green, which looks entirely different from the stock photo. It is not teal but rather a deep forest green -- yes, a bit blue-toned but definitely green, not blue.

Having come home, though, I see it is also available in navy. So I ordered it in that colour to compare. Green is a fun pop of colour for me and a bit unexpected (and it looked really nice and I liked it -- that type of forest green says "80s" to me, and 80s was the theme of "my" NAS).  But there is no question that blue works more seamlessly in my closet and might feel a bit less "gear-ish." So I'm going to compare. I will return one of them.

I also looked at a long grey sweater to replace my extremely pilled and ratty (yet deeply beloved) long grey cardigan. The Halogen wool/cashmere blend is quite lovely but who can say how it will pill? Plus, it is pricey. And I was really hoping for a slightly lighter grey tone with a bit more white in it. We tried for the Leith -- but no luck--and it is out of stock online now in my size as well. Such is life. I'll keep an eye out, but no rush. These things pop up at retail all the time.

My other in-store purchase was a wild card bag! I'd told Angie I was in the market for a new bag, mid size and structured since most of my bags are so soft and unstructured. I had no idea what this bag would or should look like, but I won't carry a bag in my hand (needs to be shoulder or cross body) and I need a bit of room for my many things.

This Coach won my heart the minute I saw it. Such soft leather but such solid structure!! Such a pretty shape! Fits under the arm so easily and can also be carried cross-body! So light weight! Gunmetal (not gold) hardware. The mustard is a total wild card for me but I think it works really well with my inks/ navies, reds/ greys.

The bag also comes in a gorgeous saddle colour, BTW.

That was it for the in store purchases.

Thanks to JAileen and Angie, I've also been able to order two items online that were out of stock earlier: the red midi coat and the VB cropped pants.

Last but not least, I ordered my undies.

I am waiting on the Blondos. I'm going to see if they stock them in Canada. Since they're not part of the sale, I don't think they will sell out in the US before I'm ready to order, and there's no real rush on this item. I do intend to get them, though.

And then, my friends, I'm done!! I've decided not to stalk the VB jacket -- much as I love it, the cheaper 1-State is going to fill a similar function and I really don't need two checked jackets for fall. Unless the stars align and it simply throws itself into my shopping cart at a vastly reduced price at some point, I'm good.

What a terrific sale I've had and how much Iearned in the process! Thanks Angie, and thank you all for reading along!

That Coach bag is excellent ! An unexpected colour for you , but terrific all the same . Looking forward to seeing how you wear it :)

Interestingly , when I just clicked on the bag link to look at the price (because this colour is right up my alley ) it says it’s ships to US addresses only . I’m going to check it out at our Coach store and see if it’s there - yes we actually have one that’s not an outlet store ;)

WOW.  You have done so incredibly well this year.  I have hung onto your every word.

  • kkards replied 4 years ago

oh, i can totally see why you would want the green Pendleton, but like you, i'd completely want the navy for how easly it would work with everything else in my closet....not sure that to advise....
the coach bag is great, i love a bag that gives options on how to carry...

  • LaPed replied 4 years ago

Ooh, that Coach bag is a good find! Warm-toned leather with cool-toned metal is sooo hard to find.

I eye those Pendleton raincoats every year. I think you should go for the green!!

What a great sale you had! I can relate to the overwhelming feeling. Having a guide to sort through it all is brilliant! You made a great decision with that particular Coach bag - both because it's a beautiful on-trend accent color and it has a zippered top for security. I ordered the smaller version because I wanted a bag to carry mostly as a cross-body, and it's going back. Flap (no zipper) so things could easily fall out, and too small to fit my essentials. Thanks for sharing the journey with us!

So glad you were able to order the red coat and the VB trousers! You did have a fabulous NAS. Super cute Coach bag, too. And my favorite part is seeing your smiles at the end of it all. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Wow, love that Coach bag! Thanks for the posts, very fun to follow along.

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

Soooo glad you went for round #2, and ordered the pants and coat :)

LOVE THE PENDLETON ON YOU. KILLER. It was soooooo much better on you than on me. I wonder which colour you will keep?

They might restock the Leith on Friday.....

The colour of the Coach is your wild card. So are the bootcuts! BEST bag at the sale, and super yummy with all your blue, silver and white.

    You had a brilliant NAS!

    Thanks, all.

Angie, I'm really curious which colour of coat I'll keep too! I might have to keep the green actually since I cut the tags. (oops!) But it is completely unworn so I'm betting if I took it back in store I could finagle something.

I think it's going to come down to outfit creation. I really liked the green -- it felt like a subtle wild card. But I do associate that particular tone with gear raincoats of the 80s/90s and so I'm not entirely sure how I'll feel in it long-term -- plus, navy is so very easy for me and works so seamlessly with everything else.

I'll play around though. Heck, at the sale price I wouldn't feel terrible about keeping both! I can't emphasize the quality of this piece enough -- it may not be high fashion but it is very, very well made. And the stock photo really doesn't do it justice. In that picture it looks like something that just hangs on a person looking blah. but that was not my impression in person at all.

I hope I ordered the right size of the VBs. I went for the 6, fearing the 4 would be too small.

Laura -- try the Nomad bag! It's so lightweight I'm not sure it would feel too big at all. And it closes properly at the top.

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

Order the US4 in the VB pants too, Suz. I don't think you are three sizes bigger than me. They fit TTS since the US0 fit me perfectly with no need for alterations on the waist. Just a guess....

HAH! You cut off the tags. Love that! Nordies will take it back though, if you decide to keep the blue.

    I like the Pendleton coat!
The Blondos are available at the Ottawa store, I think.

  • kerry replied 4 years ago

Ooo - I’m thinking of the Pendleton raincoat to replace the Boden one I was thinking of getting in the spring that Angie vetoed. Do you think the blackwatch lining (which I LOVE) limits it to just fall wear vs spring/fall?

  • Angie replied 4 years ago

Kerry, YES. The Pendleton is much better than the Boden. It's seasonless - don't worry.

  • Gretchen replied 4 years ago

I have the Pendleton in my wishlist for Friday am to replace the Black one I lost earlier this spring. Thinking green, but I do have an olive raincoat so may look at the navy instead. So glad you liked it Suz!

  • notsaf replied 4 years ago

Suz, maybe you're not looking anymore, and it may not be available in your size/colorway, but I just saw that the Hobbs trench is on sale at Bloomingdales. (Thinking about picking one up for myself in the UK in the fall as a replacement for my Club Monaco.)

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Thank you, Notsaf -- I'll check to see if they have my size -- it would fill a different wardrobe hole!

Thanks, Smittie, too, re the Blondos. I'll check the Vancouver store. That would be easier. :)

Thanks, Angie, re the sizing on the pants -- I will try the 4s also to compare.

Kerry, I think the Pendleton is fine for spring. I'll certainly wear it then. But not for WARM spring temps. The lining makes it an early spring/ fall coat -- not one you would want to wear in a summer shower. Know what I mean? You also have to know it is CASUAL. Very well made but not a dressy item.

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Alas, no trench in my size. :) I think I need the UK 8/ US 4. Onwards! :)

  • kerry replied 4 years ago

    Thanks Angie and Suz!

From your description Suz, it sounds perfect! I want casual, a little warm and well made :)

  • Suz replied 4 years ago

Then it should be perfect assuming you get the right fit!

  • Susie replied 4 years ago

Suz, I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts and am finally getting around to telling you so! Most especially the detailed process of working with Angie. Oh how I would love to do that some day! The two of you are a formidable team indeed and just so darn cute together!

You’ve had such a successful NAS. I love that you went back and found that bag; it’s beautiful! At one time I had mustard yellow shoes and I was amazed at how well they worked with colors I wear. And the Pendleton jacket sounds like a perfect find. Navy is certainly your color but a green would be a nice complement to navy and denim bottoms. And the navy would be so pretty with navy patterns, red, white and greys. Maybe you do need both!

  • replied 4 years ago

I vote for the green coat :)

  • karen13 replied 4 years ago

Yes to the green! It will look gorgeous with your navy pieces and with the amazing mustard bag. I am warming to mustard away from my face. How heavy is the Coach bag? I only do very light weights due neck/shoulder issues but am tempted.

I have only been able to lurk a bit on YLF for a while but am really enjoying shopping vicariously with you! Such lovely writing.

Oh, and get my Tumi Jena you commented on yesterday’ -you won’t regret it. Navy with gunmetal!!
