Team Navy, Reporting for Duty (with a Side of Cobalt)

Carla's thread about her navy purchases this year got me thinking about how dominant navy is in my wardrobe. I posted Finds on her thread and then realized I'd missed a bunch of items. This is just my navy/ ink or navy predominant items, mind you. I also have a lot of items with a white or grey dominant background and smatterings of navy in the pattern. And I've left my dark denim out of this collection, too, even though it more or less counts. I just edited out a few navy items, also, or this collection would have been even larger!

The first six items were purchased this year -- the rest go back to 2014. Navy has longevity in my closet and I often look for a replacement item before the current navy essential wears out.

I'm also a huge royal or cobalt fan, too, but it's more an accent.

Navy's my dark neutral and almost all my essentials are in navy (and denim). I have almost no black in my closet apart from footwear and a couple of tops and coats.

Who else has navy as their dark neutral?

Here's my side of cobalt...the tartan skirt swings both ways because it's really cobalt and black predominant but that tends to read as navy if desired.

Navy is my dark neutral about half the year, like now in spring.  White is my light neutral right now.  I am trying to put together a small travel capsule of navy , white and coral for 11 days with a carry on.   A year and pink or peach is my go to sping combo, but summer will be here soon although we have a 99% chance of several inches of snow over this weekend.   A year is also my dark neutral for fall too although more often paired with earth tones like rust or brown or olive.  Late fall joins navy more with black or dark brown.

I have lost tack of how many shades of navy I have.  One is sort of a navy/cobalt blend called sapphire.  It looks good with black.

Ideally I would also have navy as my dark neutral. It just makes a huge improvement in how I look (to my eye, the only eye that matters). Because of the nature of the way I accumulate clothing, I can't always get exactly what I want, but am slowly working up to it. And I do still like the impact of a black and white combination.

Navy is my alternate dark neutral. I realise I don’t do dark grey. I should get back on the hunt for a navy skirt.

Navy and pale grey are my hot weather neutrals and that's because when I team them with crisp white I feel cooler. (Burgundy and dark chocolate brown are my cold weather neutrals.) Best wishes to all.

Apart from dark denim , I own almost nothing in navy ! I do like it , and if my need for a broader wardrobe was there I’d have more of it . At one point it was heavily represented in coats , footwear , bags , blazers , pants , you name it . I did just add a new woven t-shirt  from POMP in a dark  indigo blue to my wardrobe and am looking forward to wearing it this summer .

I’ve always loved your Earth sandals, and the sleeveless top with the draped front is a beautiful piece that I bet is a workhorse (and I could kick myself for not getting one when it was a popular item a few years back :-(  )

That's a gorgeous collection and navy and cobalt are your colours.  We all need neutrals in our wardrobe (well need might be a bit strong) to make it easy.

I like that some of the navy are essentials, some are completers and some are statements!!

I think we can safely say you are the Captain of team blue! What a fabulous collection.

  • Dana replied 1 year ago

    Wow! I'm echoing Bijou!!

  • Laurie replied 1 year ago

Just a terrific collection, Suz. I love your style!

Yep, definitely Queen Blue. It's funny, because I used to laugh at my dad for wearing almost no other colour. Now I get it!

Sal, you're right -- some are essentials, some are completers, and some are statements, and I think that's part of why it is easy to get dressed. I can mix and match from outside the blues capsule with other items.

Carla, you know what? That top is a little trickier for me and on me than for some. It's poly, for one thing. And for another, all that draping on my small chest is not the best look. I DO love the narrow V, though -- so rare to find it.

LJP, thanks for reminding me of POMP!! I need to check out whether they've got a dress that might work!!

Violet, Joy, Rachy -- so interesting that some change neutrals with the seasons! I can see how navy might fit more easily into spring summer for many.

Jaime, I love a black and white pattern, too, as long as it is scaled to me. It's fab with grey hair!

Lots of really great items! I could shop your closet. haha!

  • rachylou replied 1 year ago

I do see navy as the ultimate spring colour…! :)

  • JAileen replied 1 year ago

It’s so great so see your navy items.  We have some of the same or similar items - FitFlop sandals, stripes - hey where’s your butterfly scarf?

  • Suz replied 1 year ago

JAileen- you're right, I didn't include that! I think of it as a bit lighter than navy. But I'll add it, pronto!

    *raises hand*

Go Team Navy! It's my "black", and you have gorgeous navy items, Suz
