Wear only one grey

I have run into the competing greys issue again and again. Grey footwear -- as Una has remarked -- is especially hard. I have an almost orphaned pair of knee high grey boots, as a matter of fact.

But Angie's first solution is a cinch. This is only a try-on. It is still too hot to wear this sweater.

But here are my new NAS booties along with a Club Monaco sweater and the old BR cream jeans.

Oooh, fab!!  I love the look, Suz. So rich and so lux.

That sweater is amazing! Wish Club Monoco did size Xl.

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Looks great!  I'm totally in love with those boots, great choice.

We're still in the 20's.... toes are still uncovered... even having clothes like this in my closet (ie not still packed away) is a bit of sacrilege.  So take that off, NOW! )

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

You are a vision in this almost white outfit, Suz! Good use of Angie's tips ;-)
I found that to combine greys successfully they have to be of the same undertones: blue, green or purple. These booties look like having a green undertone. I think they should work with your Danier jacket and with other taupe items - no?

BTW, looks like you are giving a lot of business to CM lately :-) How do you like this sweater: it looks tempting in alpaca blend. Not itchy?

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Hah!! It is not on, Elizabeth -- we also have uncovered toes in these parts...also in the 20s here. I haven't switched out my closet. This was a late July try on when the items first arrived.

Thistle, this sweater was a real deal -- super sale price. But it's for real winter. I won't be pulling it out in earnest for several months . I HOPE.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Ha, Sveta, CM is the new J. Crew.

These booties are definitely on the taupe end of the spectrum. A bit greenish and a bit brownish, but so comfy I don't care what they are, LOL. I think they will work with my taupe leather jacket and taupe suit jacket as well as a number of other items. Definitely with regular denim, too.

ETA -- the sweater is not itchy for me but it is a bit "shedding"  -- as in it is losing fibres and making me sneeze a bit. I think this will resolve with a wear or two (which is why I kept it). It is a VERY warm, true winter sweater. Not for autumn except as outerwear.

Love it! Are those booties really gray? The product photo looks firmly taupe to me. If so, they should be perfect to pair with your creams, sand, oatmeal, taupe, etc.

  • replied 8 years ago

Wow.  I would rate this ensemble a "10."

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

Great outfit, Suz. I agree with Aida: those gray boots look taupe to me. But so do most of my "gray" footwear.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Suz, this works just beautifully.  The boots become a subtle statement here and it's a great look.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

I would call them more taupe, too, but the product description says grey. IRL, they are far less grey than my blue -greys, but far more grey than my true taupes . In other words, they are in that awful nether world that Angie's blog post addresses, LOL!! Luckily, they work fine with black, brown, denim (of various washes) -- and that is pretty much how I expect to use them. :)

Perfect! This is a very sophisticated casual look, Suz. You look like you're checking into the lodge in Banff for a long cozy weekend.

  • Runcarla replied 8 years ago

Suz, this is just the perfect winter white combo! (Thanksgiving outfit, etc!?!?) Also, a brilliant way to incorporate your grey footwear.

Angie's post was interesting, but I will eschew the grew (and taupe) footwear for now (even though my F/W capsule is olive and GREY!). That said, my silver shoes ARE workhorses. (It is really all about cognac for me!)

And, what Elizabeth said! Though I am into my olive items this week, it is also bare legs and open toe footwear!

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

Hah yes I know this shade well! It's the only "warm" gray that somewhat works for me (aside from going straight to taupe, which actually works much better). Can be tough though. I tend to use any items in this shade as the "only gray" as you did here; often the "only brown", too.

  • Windchime replied 8 years ago

Great idea to pair your grey ankle boots with that beautiful cream outfit, Suz! That sweater looks SO warm and soft; there's one small reason to actually look forward to winter.

  • shedev replied 8 years ago

Great outfit Suz. Those boots are awesome.

  • replied 8 years ago

Really great sweater Suz - and the whole look is made by the boots.  I think you're going to be wearing those an awful lot this winter - I know I would :)  They remind me of a pair I have (different brand and higher heel but very same colouring and brownish strap detail) that I can wear with just about every single thing I own. When they were newer and fresher i used to wear them with CM silk shifts and a "matching" distressed brown leather belt .  Now they are my beat-up boots:) I love yours.

  • Marley replied 8 years ago

Really cute Suz - but darn it I don't want to think about winter outfits just yet!

  • Karie replied 8 years ago

A perfect example of Angie's advice on wearing only one gray. But I can't bear to think about winter sweaters just yet!

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Yup, perfect. You saw my pewter loafers and those seem to have no obvious warm or cool tone, making them a foil (haha) for everything! Metallic works so much better if you are mixing but otherwise one grey seems the most comprehensible.

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

Great outfit!  I have problems with greys too and find it so frustrating when they don't play well together.  One grey at a time is a good solution.

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

Sensational! White on white looks so luxe. And the boots are perfect.

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Perfect! I am thinking of doing the same for my taupe-grey mix boots come winter :)

  • replied 8 years ago

Well I think you look amazing as usual Suz!

Funny, but competing greys didn't bother me one bit when I put this outfit together last week for the challenge. I think of it as combining cream, white and ivory...just all neutrals. I'm not colour blind or anything, so I can see the tonal/colour values...I just didn't care :D

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

Yeay! I think this is one good shoe choice for an white out outfit! Much better (& softer) than a black one for us blondes:-).

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

Diane, you don't have to care about! Your tonal and color values for that all greys outfit are just perfect!!!!

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

What Lyn said, Diane. You did this expertly and so it's not an issue. The issue seems more acute with grey accessories. My mother, who loved grey bags and shoes, used to complain about the dearth of them between the 80s and the last few years. But I think there is a reason. Grey accessories seem harder to work with than black, cognac, navy, true taupe.

  • replied 8 years ago

I think I said this in another discussion we were having about gray accessories recently.....I find a lot of plain grey leather can look fake and cheap. Moreso than can happen with black leather.  It has a flat quality that looks like paint primer in some leathers.....I don't know , maybe it's just a personal thing, but to me, a grey is best in suede or with some distressing or other textural element.  I'm not including your boots in that thought  Suz as to me they aren't really gray. Boy, spellcheck does not like our English Canadian spelling of that colour!  I have to retype it about 5 times to get it to stick.  As for combining grays -  I do notice it and have a hard time with it unless the bases are equal. Warm and cool together just don't work to my eye.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Lisa, I agree with what you are saying. Taupe can be similar at times, which is one reason so many taupe boots/ booties are in suede, I think.

My tall grey boots are suede and I agree with you that these short ones are on the taupe side of grey.

As for spellcheck, I have stopped arguing with it! :)

But also, I'm confused; I always thought GREY was the British (and Canadian English) spelling and GRAY was US.

    Scratching grey head.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

    Killer Stunning.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

I'm stealing your jumper with my attack dog Sam.

  • viva replied 8 years ago

I love this look -- those booties are so perfect with the all-cream outfit. They have a softness to them that works better than any stronger color would. Grey or gray (I never know which to use anyway!) I love them. (And PS, of course I went straight to the CM site looking for that sweater! There is still a M for any Canadians out there, but none for the US ladies, sadly.)

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

    Problem solved...gorgeous!

  • texstyle replied 8 years ago

LOVE this Suz - and I have those BR cream jeans so I'm totally copying this when it gets cool enough. :-D

  • replied 8 years ago

I love this! How do you feel about all white? I'm not up for it yet, and I'm not sure why...Anyway, I love your boots and I can see a colourful bag working well with them. The Frye site recently featured some shoes that were roughly the same grey as yours, and they paired them with a bright yellow bag...looked awesome.

  • Maude Bird replied 8 years ago

I really like this. And I don't think it is something I would have put together. Thanks for posting pictures.

  • Eliza replied 8 years ago

Like this look and appreciate the review of that sweater (which I had to stop myself from describing as "yummy"- oops).  Gorgeous and way to make the gray booties work. I find the taupe grays most challenging in my generally blue-gray wardrobe.

    Well done.

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 8 years ago

    Fantastic!

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

What a lovely look, this will be wonderful when it cools down.

Yes I think the grey boots are perfect, a little more unexpected than taupe or cognac, which would work as well.

I also think blue jeans and the same sweater and boots will work brilliantly for a slightly less luxe look!

  • rachylou replied 8 years ago

    Beautiful!

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Hey snow princess - it's not that cold there already is it? (I should read the text more carefully huh?). You look gorgeous anyway!

  • dakotacheryl replied 8 years ago

Love this combo, and like you, I am still in open toe/warm weather clothes and I'm so tired of it. Can't wait to wear my sweaters, and boots...of course by December, I'll be itching to get back into Spring clothes LOL.

Those grey boots are a great addition to the cream top and bottom. I also like grey with red, denim etc. Black can be too dark to my eye, unless there are other blacks in the outfit.
