WIW: Shirt, shell top & bottoms

I feel like Huckleberry Finn. Or maybe a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. (I AM an Urban Prince, after all.)

Taking my inspiration from Angie's ensemble, I am off to the dentist. It's our last warm day, so I am wearing the cage sandals!

Shirt: Hinge doublefaced. Defying the "Jenna roll" because it does not work on this shirt. Too bad, Jenn.

Cable knit vest: From depths of donation bag, like Joy's. Winners.

Jeans: GAP Original fit selvedge. Rescued from daughter's donate bag. On me they are like slim BF jeans. I didn't have a super dark wash pair. Score! (And for free, too!)

Belt: MK

Shoes: Vince Camuto

Bag: Danier.

Jacket (don't actually need it now, but just in case) -- Elie Tahari.

Teeth: Kingstown Dental Clinic.

I have to run but will be back later. :)

Wonderful rendition Suz!  And how fun that you get to wear sandals (while I am in booties).  Those donation bags seem to be full of treasures :)

  • Alexandra replied 9 years ago

Totally fabulous! How did those things ever get put into the donation bags?

  • cjh replied 9 years ago

YLF!! Aren't those double faced fabrics nice?

  • replied 9 years ago

Oh, I really like this on you - the dark jeans are a perfect fit from the looks of it.Great shirt too - I bet it is super cozy and comfortable.  You look perfectly polished here - and those teeth?  Wow, they really add to the ensemble :)

Curious if you tried the shirt partially or fully untucked.

  • Sveta replied 9 years ago

Don't you love being able to shop your daughter closet? Usually it is way around but this summer you were in luck :-)
Stunning outfit as usual (I may be biased on the jacket of course). Is the shell fluid in fit enough to be comfortable in this ensemble? If so then what a rescue!
It is raining cats and dogs here in London and it looks it is going to be our last warm day as well. Time to start packing away the summer things but I am wearing them today for the (possibly) last time this year.

  • AviaMariah replied 9 years ago

Perfect!  I can't believe you're still in sandals.  I've been in booties a few weeks.  :)

  • Gracie replied 9 years ago

I love this outfit on you!  The colors really sing with your complexion and hair. I guess Angie's post sent everybody digging in their donation bags – how timely! I like your interpretation with the shirt tucked in and the vest faux-tucked showing the belt. Hanging shirt-tails sometimes don't work for me because of length or fabric or cut. You look fantastic!

  • Alassë replied 9 years ago

Suz, you look great! Something about the high-necked shell over buttoned-to-the-top button-down seems very you (maybe the modern classic?). Not to mention the cohesive, repeating colours in your outfit, right down to the sandals. Wow!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

    Thank you!

Alasse, that is sweet to say, and I think you are right about this look being very "me." I'm a bit of a girly tomboy, I guess. Refined version. Also, these colours (?) or maybe I should call them neutrals -- navy, soft blue grey, and mauve and taupe -- are among my very best. I put that Hinge shirt on and immediately saw the flattery. I'm not sure if that makes me a "soft" summer rather than the "true" summer I've been diagnosed as, but whatever. ;)

Gracie, thank you -- and you're absolutely right. I tried to untuck the shirt but the combo of the length of the vest and the length of the shirt messed up the proportion. So I tucked the shirt and faux tucked the vest instead.

    AviaMariah, I guess I am a die-hard sandal hold out!! :)

Sveta, I have you to thank for this jacket. And yes, the vest is perfectly comfortable with a shirt underneath. Fluid enough, although I would say it is on the tailored side of fluid. That's the shirt's level of fluidity, too, so they work together pretty well.

Lisa, thanks! The shirt is a truly 4 season shirt. Amazing!

cjh, Alexandra, Tanya -- thank you!

Love this! I think I'm going to try to thrift a shell of some kind.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Killer to the power of Killer. xo

  • amiable replied 9 years ago

I"m studying yours and Diana's to figure out how to do it.  This should work for my Tomboy self if I can figure out how to make it not too preppy for me :)

  • chouette22 replied 9 years ago

Lucky you with that vest! It looks really nice with the shirt. I have just done the same and re-tried two vests I had in a donation pile, however they are just too narrow. I am looking for something more fluid, so they didn't get to come back into the closet. I also tried on a couple of vests in some stores (and have been on the look-out for a while) and just cannot find a perfect one. A really elusive item for me! Will keep looking as this might give some new life to some button-downs I don't wear often.

  • Suzanne (ambergreen) replied 9 years ago

Totally fab...but you know that already. :) I am in awe of those of you who can pull off blazers so well in daily life. They usually make me look like a stuffed...something. My fave part of this though is the seasonal "confusion" with the sandals. But I put that in quotation marks because there's no confusion here--it completely works.

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Oh boy, when you popped that jacket on for the second photo I plonked...gorgeous!

  • gardenchick replied 9 years ago

    Great look...love it!

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

I love every bit of this --- not surprised at all at Angie's rating!
I can't believe how well the polished Tahari jacket works with this casual mix.
Those jeans look perfect for you -- and everyone needs a dark wash for winter!

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

LOL @ teeth. This is fabulous for your style. I like how well the tucked tops and belting look. Maybe our donation bags need to be renamed...something like soon-to-be-trending treasures. It never fails that I get rid of something and then Angie shows us a way to wear it.

  • Staysfit replied 9 years ago

I just love this look!  How nice that you can get clothes from your DD!  We keep our giveaways in a separate room, it's like a holding spot, and they stay there for close to a year before I actually do anything with them.  This is because someone typically wants something back, or my daughter or I trade clothes (we are also the same size in clothes, but different body shapes).

  • abc replied 9 years ago

That blazer is so k-worthy every time I see it. Gorgeous outfit as always. Love that you're getting more warm weather and can extend your sandal weather just a few more days.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

    Angie, a K2K? Thank you!!!

I credit it all to the Hinge shirt (an Angie pick), the VC sandals (similar to an Angie pick), the ensemble (an Angie idea), and the jacket (a Sveta pick!)

abc, you are right -- it's just a fantastic jacket. I really like how different it is from my Reiss blazer (purchased on the same weekend). This one is body skimming with snug sleeves; the Reiss is more fitted. Both are fab in different ways. And both are really easy for me to throw on over jeans.

Staysfit, that's sort of what my daughter and I are doing now, unless we give something to my stepdaughter, who is also close to the same size. My daughter is just s smidge taller than me and larger framed; my step-daughter is a smidge shorter and smaller framed. Daughter is an IT; I'm a hourglass/ rectangle; step-daughter is also an hourglass/ rectangle.

Joy, we certainly did well with our donate bins today, didn't we? With Angie's help, of course! :)

Beth Ann, thank you. I really love this jacket best with jeans. Funny, isn't it?

    Gardenchick, Jackie, thank you!

Ambergreen, it is really interesting how the look that feels and looks the most natural on one person is so hard for another to wear. I am equally in awe of women who can wear wrap dresses or truly high heels or tough moto jackets or cocoon-like drape. They never feel (or look) right on me.

Chouette, I hear you. This vest is not perfect for the "boxy" idea, either. It's fluid, but not boxy, so it won't work with an untucked top very well (as I discovered a few days ago when I tried it in a different outfit combination.) But I'm glad I kept it anyway because it's a nice soft cotton knit that doesn't make me overheat.

Amy, I think you can do this. It IS an admittedly preppy look with a high crew collar like mine. Although it is weird; I don't feel preppy in it!  You might try a V neck instead, although that can skew even more preppy at times. Maybe it's a question of going for a different style of shell entirely.

Una, I can't wait to see the UWP version of this!

  • Vicki replied 9 years ago

You look amazing in these "donated" pieces and may I ask about the "Jenna roll" and what "double-faced" means with the shirt?

So you've been diagnosed a "true summer" have you?  Claire thinks I may be a "light summer" and I think I like and prefer the colors you show above, even more.

Everything is just so beautiful with the bag (Danier, won't you please come to California?) and new jacket, and your teeth look pretty, too.

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

I love this! That jacket - what can I say, it's completely ultra fabulous. Brings back memories of Boston and the great fun we had!

I was just thinking this morning that the shirt and shell top combo wasn't for me, and then I saw this. Now I have to have it!

Swap out the sandals for booties, and this is a great combo that will take you through the cooler fall weather.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Vicki, the Jenna roll is here. Jenna, of J. Crew fame. But this shirt is too soft and won't stay cuffed that way so I had to do it my own way. The double faced fabric is a super soft lightweight cotton, a bit sheer -- almost like a muslin. The shirt is made of two layers of this stuff. One one side it is a slightly larger plaid, on the other side it is a smaller check. All in the same colours. You can see it a bit in the Finds photo.

I have been diagnosed true summer but I'm not confident about the diagnosis, LOL. I don't think it matters, to be completely honest. I mean I don't think we need to get nit-picky about it. I do think it helps to have a general ballpark -- I'm cool vs. warm; I look better in mid-tones vs. neon brights, etc. Anyway,  I pick and choose between ALL of summer's colours except the yellows and anything verging on coral, because I can't wear those.

Karie, you would look sensational in this vest look. For sure!! It's made for you, actually.

  • unfrumped replied 9 years ago

I think it all works really well!
I get your Huck reference--when I wore a plaid shirt with BF jeans I just thought, huck, hick, this may not work. But I don't see that here. The sandals do a lot to juxtapose with the boyish vest look.  The type of shirt, while not dressy, is  more modern than LLBean. Good job! (Hope you had happy teeth.)

  • Windchime replied 9 years ago

The first pic completely surpassed my expectations, which are always high when scrolling to a Suz WIW, and then I saw the second picture with the jacket and--plonk! You look amazing. You manage to pull off triple layers with sandals and look fab and happy doing so. Thanks for the continuing inspiration!

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

This worked wonderfully! I love that you dug out your sweater from the donate bag and your jeans from your daughter's. Really suits you so well. And I know what you mean about that sleeve roll, she made it seem so easy but my sleeves slip right out of it.

  • Vicki replied 9 years ago

Just had to pop back in to say that I loved the Jenna Lyons video and YES to the clothes, cuffing and lipstick.  What a fun and fabulous video.

  • Marley replied 9 years ago

Suz - you look gorgeous!  Love this outfit especially with the jacket.  So cool!
