Ensembling it

I just loved Angie's blog post today. For me, 2014 was the year of the working wardrobe -- the first time in my life when I actually had enough clothes in my closet and enough options to wear more than just a couple of variations of the same outfits again and again. So the almost-weekly ensemble posts were a revelation and a much-needed opportunity to play. I tried versions of almost all of them. Even if I was travelling! Unless I simply did not have anything in my closet that came close to the inspiration, I gave it a shot. I started really looking forward to Fridays.

Here are my versions of the most popular ones.

1. Ink, brown, grey & black

2. Grey and lilac. This is actually a new version. I can't find last year's on my computer but here were my outfits.

3. Light blue, dark red, white -- copied from Parsley!

4/ 5. This is one I hadn't actually tried yet, so I am wearing today. Tomato is underrepresented in my closet. My toffee is closer to taupe or tan So...the bracelet has tomato red in it. My socks are also tomato red. I'm actually wearing #5 today.  Sorry for the photo quality -- light is wonky.

6. Winter white out -- most recent iteration, worn yesterday!

7. Dark red, bright pink, and orange. Magic scarf to the rescue again!

8. Modern classics

9. One of my personal favourites -- sparkly sweater dressed up or down.

But honestly, I have so many favourites -- MOTG statement sweater (11), relaxed pencil skirt with pullover (12), denim skirt refresher (10), lilac, toffee & white (13), cropped sweater over longer top (14), MOTG cardigan, jeans, booties (15), urban equestrian (16)  ...and that is just from this autumn!

As LisaP mentioned the other day, it's also fun to go way back in the archives for more ideas -- most of those outfits look as fresh today as they did a year or two ago, and if not, a few tweaks is all it takes to bring them up to 2015.

Thanks to Angie for providing us with endless inspiration.

YAY FOR OUTFIT VARIETY. You are there, Suz. I'm glad that you now have a wardrobe that works well for your lifestyle. WELL DONE.

And thank you for your Friday Ensemble support. It made me very happy to see you - along with Tanya, Mary, Amy and Shannon - recreate the morning ensemble on the same day or day after. I was wowed.

VERY fun to see the new combinations - especially #4. And your specs do a great job of livening up the greys in #15.

You know I have a soft spot for #6, and #12 is brilliantly Casual Chic.

I vote killer all round. You are an inspiration to us all. xo

Oh, Angie, thank you! I am blushing!

I was thinking of Tanya, Mary, Amy, Shannon, and others, too -- Joy has done a lot of these outfits! So has Sveta, although she can't always do them on Fridays -- she often does them the following week.

And I know many other forum members have done a few or many.

Maybe others will post their versions, which would be a lot of fun.

These are great outfits!  I'm so impressed that you have the pieces to recreate so many ensembles on a moment's notice.  I don't usually have the right pieces.  Also, it usually takes me days to think about it and figure out how to incorporate the elements into an outfit that fits my style.

Suz, this is a super fabulous collection of outfits. I have to single out 14, because it is so different looking from the rest. What a fun change of silhouette and cool way to update a pair of trousers! You are an inspiration.

I'm glad you are pleased with your work wardrobe now, Suz! This is a great collection of outfits based on Angie's Friday's ensebles! Always love to see your rendintions, as they are a gorgeous RL inspiration! Hope, you'll keep us posted in 2015, too!!:-)

Amazing array of outfits Suz - and you look model gorgeous in all of them. I am particularly drawn to #1 and would love to copy cat that one!

  • PalmFronds replied 9 years ago

Wow Suz, you look totally wicked in these outfits, I am so impressed! And inspired to also aim for a true working wardrobe that you describe. Brava to you!

  • deb replied 9 years ago

Suz, you are so good at this. Love all of them.

  • kkards replied 9 years ago

wow, seeing all of them at one time, it just took my breath away. i'm so impressed with the way you have taken angie's ideas and translated them into outfits that work so well for you and on you!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

Wow - talk about an impressive group of outfits Suz! That Angie sure knows how to inspire with those ensemble posts doesn't she? For me, the ensemble posts are invaluable because they often show something I NEVER would have come up with on my own - just wouldn't think of it, you know?

I would say my two favorite ensemble posts would be the Knitted Tube Skirt with Hard Edge and Toffee/Tomato/White/Burgundy (pics attached for the latter). And actually looking at those pics, I need to wear that again!

    Inspiring!

  • Staysfit replied 9 years ago

Absolutely fabulous! I love today's outfit too! Nicely done!

This is AMAZING Suz!  I really need to pay more attention to the Friday posts... Friday would be a perfect day to try them, as it's casual day at work, so pretty much anything goes.  If I look at the posts later in teh day on the weekend (which is usual, when I'm reminded by the email notification) I don't need to "dress" on the weekend, then I'm in work clothes for the next few days, then I've forgotten :)

Perhaps this can be one of my 2015 goals... to try them more.  I definitely find it fun.  And extremely useful.

How do you keep track of all Angie's ensembles, and if you tried them or not?  I guess I could make a note in stylebook....

  • Sharon replied 9 years ago

These are all just so fab, Suz, and a great illustration of Angie's point about an ensemble requiring a person in order to be an outfit. Because each one looks like it is a reflection of your polished, modern, cohesive style rather than following a formula. That is actually one of the things I enjoy most about the ensembles - how different and individual everyone looks even when dressing within the same guidelines.

You look gorgeous in all of them, but I especially love #1, #6, #9 and #16.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Sharon, thank you for those kind words. And guess what? You picked my own favourites. :)

Elizabeth, I don't really keep track of the ensembles or whether I've done them -- I just remembered that I had done most and went back into my photos to find the examples. It took me a little while to get it together. If you go to the blog page and look under "categories" you can find them all -- I occasionally go there for inspiration. You can look at them as thumbnails, all together.

I think it's a great idea to make this a Friday goal for yourself. It was for me this year. I couldn't always do it, or couldn't always wear the outfit on Friday, but I always checked the blog before getting fully dressed. That might not work for you because of the timing -- it usually appears around 8 am my time, so for you, that might be too late. So maybe you could simply make it a goal to wear Friday's outfit the next week?

    Thanks, Staysfit and LAR!

Shannon, you look delicious in your rendition -- thanks for posting!!

Thanks, kkards, DEB, PalmFronds, Susan, Lyn, Sharan, Sara. It was fun putting this together.

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 9 years ago

Wow, love seeing this as one collection!  And look at those different silhouettes... You really rock at taking Angie's inspirations and making them your own!

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

That timing is good to know Suz, thanks.  I might make that more of a goal... I've certainly tried several of them, but more when it's "oh I can do that" rather than "oh, I should put some real effort into trying that".  It was one of my Una Challenge categories, after all :).  A lot of the colour ones don't work for me, but that doesn't mean I can't mold them to work somehow.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Ha, Elizabeth, that's a plus and minus of having a defined palette. You will notice that I wear a heck of a lot of scarves in these photos. In fact, you'd think I wear a scarf every day!!

Not so. In fact, I rarely wear them any more. But a couple of them allow me to "do the combos" or at least pretend to be doing them. :)

  • Helena replied 9 years ago

Awesome, Suz! I LOVE #2 especially ... So pretty!

  • replied 9 years ago

Suz, I've said it before and I'll say it again:  you have one of the best closets going. I feel like I could open the door, pull out a few things, and have complete confidence that everything would work.  For me :)

You have put a lot of work into collecting a great group of pieces and it shows.  Your success proves that creating a wardrobe that works is not a small task, nor necessarily easy, but has great payoff in the long term.  Way to go!

p.s. it's interesting to see that nearly half of your ensembles feature white jeans.  Not many people can wear them well - but you certainly do!

  • Dimity replied 9 years ago

What a great way to keep your wardrobe combos fresh and interesting! Love your outfits.

  • Windchime replied 9 years ago

Way to work your wardrobe, Suz! This is an awesome variety of silhouettes and styles (are you SURE you get bored with your clothes sometimes?!) I love cranberry on you any time and any way you wear it. I also love your sparkly sweater, quilted denim skirt, and grey piped sweater.

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

Fantastic outfits! I love #12 most of all. You do have a fabulous wardrobe. I need to start doing those ensemble posts - I would always be running a few days behind, though, as I plan on Saturday for the following week.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Thanks, Karie. I think you could definitely plan to do them for Mondays. I would love the company and would look out for you and Elizabeth!  :)

Windchime, thank you -- and do you know what? This is the first year that I have not been bored. I think switching up the silhouettes (and having enough variety in the first place) seem to have done the trick.

    Thanks, Dimity and TG

Lisa, you are welcome to come over and borrow something any time! :)

That is so interesting about the white jeans; I hadn't noticed! Looking at what I actually wear (since I am keeping track these days) I note that since October I have actually only worn white or cream jeans 8 times. I'll bet Angie's ensembles inspire me to wear them because she features them so often.

The first time I wore white jeans I felt as if everyone was staring at my whale-like thighs. I almost wanted to cover myself up. I STILL feel a bit weird when they peek out underneath a coat. (I don't mind wearing them with a jacket at all -- just a longer coat -- weird or what?) I did get used to it, though. But I wore them around the house a bunch of times before venturing forth.

You are a fabulous embodiment of Angie's ensembles Suz! I am going to pick #9 as my tiptop favorite in a close contest. I love asymmetry too!
