Lost luggage! Update: safe return :)

So....remember those fab online finds I mentioned a couple of days ago?

Stay tuned. As of now, most of them are lost!

I went for a very short over the border family jaunt. (Daughter's Christmas gift involved a short visit to the US).

So....on the way back, my suitcase was not put onto the plane and it is missing.

We managed to get home in dreadful freezing rain so I am not complaining. But currently in the "lost pile" are my new Citizens of Humanity jeans, my new Vince tops, my new Theory jacket (which I hadn't even had the chance to decide to keep yet!)

Meanwhile I do have the Kut plaid skinnies because I happened to be wearing them, plus the boots and the Okalas.

I am not panicking but keeping calm and carrying on. But with the weather the way it is, I think it is safe to assume that I may not get this suitcase before Christmas. And oh--- Mr. Suz's Christmas present and some of my daughter's stocking stuffers are also in the bag.  :(

Not to mention a whole lot of my older clothes, including some favourites like the Stuart Weitzman booties.

Cross fingers for me.

UPDATE: Got it back! I can't believe that they sent it, actually. The driving is horrendous. It took the poor delivery man about two hours to come from the border (normally a 40 minute drive). He said it was actually much, much worse between Watertown and the border because it wasn't plowed there; at least the 401 was salted and plowed. He wouldn't even take a cup of tea or coffee. Luckily, his vehicle was a Volvo.

Everything is safe and sound. Our power was out much of the night and all this morning. Hoping everyone in Toronto is okay. I think it may be worse there.

    Oh Dear!
Let's hope Santa delivers all your stuff safe and sound.

:( Wishing your luggage back to you post haste! How aggravating...

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    :(

    (((HUGS))))

But you will get your suitcase back, right?

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I THINK I should get it back, Angie. I am trusting that it will come. The real problem is the current weather combined with the holiday. In my worst case imaginings I can see a delay (due to the absolutely horrid weather) combined with the holiday, leading to a major SNAFU of some kind -- suitcase gone entirely missing, etc. But I am choosing at the moment to assume that it will be returned to me sometime between tomorrow and Christmas, and at the worst case, by New Year's.   :)

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

Crossing my fingers that everything will be returned to you before Christmas in perfect condition and maybe with some bonus gift from the airlines. I wonder where you clothes traveled to...

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Oh no! At least you're home safe and sound - now it's time for the suitcase to follow suit. Sooner than later.

  • minimalist replied 10 years ago

    Oh, Suz! :-/

Sending good vibes, to you and your clothes, and hopes that you're soon reunited.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

Oh no. Thinking positive thoughts for you! I hope everything works out!

  • Shirley replied 10 years ago

Have faith. Airlines are really good with returning lost luggage. You will have them back soon I am sure.

  • Windchime replied 10 years ago

Oh, Suz, how incredibly aggravating! Keeping my fingers crossed with you that all is returned promptly, in good shape.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Oh shite Suz! What a nightmare! All your new stuff! Well I am sure you had good ID on the tags and such; I know you will get the suitcase soon. K

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

Aw, Suz, I know that feeling, but, in my experience, I've never had an airline actually lose my bag. Usually it is delivered to my hotel, or home, in a day or so. Unless something really unusual happens, in most cases a tagged bag eventually makes its way to where it ought to be.

The weather in southern Ontario really looks ugly right now, so I'm glad you made it home safely. Ice storms are not fun when you are traveling!

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

Oh, no!  I am sure you will get it back!  Fingers crossed it happens on time!!!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

That's it, Gaylene. I've had delayed luggage a few times but never a completely lost bag. So I am trusting to good fate. Plus, the fact that we made it home safely is the biggest piece of luck. It was positively dreadful on the roads today and may be worse tomorrow in our area. Our main streets are a skating rink right now. It is not the fabled Ice Storm of 1998, but getting close. Our power was out for several hours this afternoon.

  • Gaylene replied 10 years ago

I've seen some of the pictures of people skating on the main roads in your area--funny but kind of scary at the same time. Son and DIL are supposed to be flying back from Vancouver to TO tomorrow afternoon so hoping that the worst is over by then. Christmas travel is not fun at the best of times, but with ice storms in Ontario and the east, and snow in Vancouver, it is especially hard this year. Spending Christmas in an airport trying to re-book cancelled flights isn't the best experience, especially if kids are involved. Makes our frigid temps on the Prairies seem not bad by comparison.

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 10 years ago

Suz, my luggage has been lost at least 8 times (5 or 6 in one year) and I ALWAYS got it back in a day or so.  Once they have scanned it, I think it is just a matter of tracking it down.

Hope they get it back to you soon!!!

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

Awwh! So sorry. Sure you will get your stuff back.... But when.... Oh. well this sucks but you made it... I have heard how terrible your weather is on the news...

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Oh, no! You must be a saint to be so calm; I am having an aneurism just reading about this. Sending out tons of positive vibes, Suz. :(

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

    Oh, that's awful, Suz!
I do think it's likely that you'll get it back soon, but still, it's a pain to have it lost.
I usually travel with carry on luggage, except on the way home from trips when I've done some shopping. The worst that I've had happen was that my bag once had an 8 day vacation in Paris without me (Airline employee strikes!) It did eventually find its way home, but I was starting to get nervous about it.
Crossing my fingers that it gets there in time for Christmas!

  • Gigi replied 10 years ago

So sorry, Suz! What a downer to have to deal with at Christmas. I hope they find your bag promptly.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Hope they get it back to you soon. Like the others I've never had a total loss just annoying delays :)

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Yes, another with lost but never forever bags. We travel a lot and our nieces also have a knack for having their bags lost but in every case they have turned up eventually. The eventually is the nightmare of course. Glad you made it back safe and sound in any case!

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

Hope your bag finds its way home quickly.

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Suz, you will probably get it back. In the meantime, go shopping to replace these things, and take advantage of the allowance the airlines will give you. :).
But what sucky timing, with presents involved.

Stay safe in this nutty storm!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Let us know when it turns up!  So glad you're home safe and sound!

So, I guess you'll have to resort to "pantry" dressing.  You know, like making dinner from what you have on hand?

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz, well done on not stressing out over this. While traveling in Thailand I arrived in Phuket but my case didn't. I had the additional challenge of language difficulties at the airport and then trying to follow up the lost bag by phone was impossible. I finally phoned my best friend in Melbourne (we had travelled with an Aussie airline) and she did the follow up for me...my bag arrived about 12 hours after she started making phone calls, almost 2 days after the bag went missing. So I have every faith that your case will arrive and I am believing it will arrive before Christmas xxx

  • Greyscale replied 10 years ago

Oh no! I hope you're reunited with it quickly.

Like many of us, I tend to travel with my favorite clothes and shoes, and more than once I've thought "omg, what if this whole suitcase was lost for good on some trip??" I'm glad that almost never happens.

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Oh dear! I hope you get your bag soon. I think with today's computerized systems it's usually fairly straightforward to find the bag. When I flew home from Athens in October, I had what ended up being a 45 minute layover in Paris that involved changing terminals and going through exit immigration. I made it on to the flight but my luggage did not. But they knew in Boston exactly where it was - ALL the bags from Athens (like 10 people) were still in Paris! But they came on the flight the next day and the nice thing is they are delivered to your door.

Anyway I tend to take my bag as carryon whenever possible when I'm going somewhere but I check it when returning home, my logic being I have plenty of other clothes at home, but I wouldnt want to be stranded somewhere on vacation or business without my clothes!

  • carter replied 10 years ago

Oh, so sorry! Mine used to get lost every other time I visited my former in-laws. My MIL would want to loan me her way too big double knit pants and my SIL would give me frilly tops to wear. No joke...just shoot me now. At least you are home now with your own clothes to wear while your suitcase makes its journey. I've never had one gone forever...just long enough to make an anything-but-a-vacation trip that much worse;-)

  • vipanchi replied 10 years ago

Thats horrible Suz! Praying that you will get it back soon!

  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago

No fun at all. Sort of sickening even knowing that you're likely to get it back fairly soon.

  • Kristin SF replied 10 years ago

Sorry that you have to deal with such a headache right before Christmas, but yes -- the most important thing is that you all arrived home safely in terrible weather!

Those airlines are good at losing things, but pretty darn good at recovering and delivering them, when all's said and done. Fingers crossed that the missing suitcase will arrive on your doorstep soon!!

  • RoseandJoan replied 10 years ago

Sincerely hope you are reunited soon.

Wost case scenaria, would there be compensation?

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Oh no! I only had a suitcase get lost once, and of course it was when I packed everything in it, (not even one outfit in my carry-on) because "my suitcase never gets lost." It was a big, purple suitcase (I dubbed it "the Barney bag") and when I got on a plane going to Grand Cayman, Barney got on a plane going to Miami. Since it was scanned, the airline knew where it was and I got it the next afternoon.
Fingers crossed that you will get yours in the next day or two!

  • replied 10 years ago

You have such an awesome attitude Suz!

    Keep safe out there.

P.S. Our Christmas luggage that was lost a few years back during an awful snow storm made it back to us safe and sound.

  • replied 10 years ago

On NO! I'm so sorry this happened to you, and what timing! I'm just glad that your wardrobe is bigger than mine, and you don't have everything you own in that one bag, lol!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Oh Suz, I am sorry to hear that! Keeping fingers crossed you will get them soon!
I think we were lucky that this freezing rain just threatened us but did not materialize until this morning and in a very mild form. I am glad you made it home safely, this was the most important thing!

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Oh, good luck, Suz. I am crossing my fingers it gets back to you, quickly and with everything intact.

One time a few years ago, I flew into Dallas, got my suitcase from the baggage claim, got to my MIL's house, and unpacked it before I realized that someone had taken my entire cosmetic case out of it. All my toiletries, hairbrush, etc., including a prescription. I was so steamed! I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork documenting each item and how much it cost to replace it, and it took months to get reimbursed.

When I was flying to Svalbard, Norway, last year (the originating point for a two-week stint on a ship in the Arctic), I had to change planes in Oslo, and my connecting flights ran very close. I had to sprint through the airport to make my flight to Svalbard, and I was warned my checked bag might not make it for another 24 hours. Sure enough, I had to check into my hotel in Svalbard with only my camera gear on me. Thank goodness the airline was very good about following through, AND that I had given myself a full extra day before our ship was embarking from Svalbard. My luggage showed up at the hotel at about 4am the following morning! One of our fellow passengers on the ship was not so lucky -- he arrived later, and his luggage was delayed, so he was scrambling around the little town in Svalbard, trying to buy what he needed for two weeks of Arctic exploration -- gloves, hats, socks, long underwear, pants, you name it. I felt so bad for him!

These kind of snafus are the main reason why I have given myself a whole extra day in Punta Arenas, Chile before embarking for the Antarctic in a couple of months.

  • Joyce B replied 10 years ago

So sorry that this happened to you. I hope they will find your suitcase soon.

  • merwoman replied 10 years ago

    sending you hugs Suz!!!

If I remember, last year it was that blasted service (or lack of delivery service) from Nordstroms that kept your holiday wardrobe from arriving, this year it is the ice storm!

Fingers crossed that everything makes it way to you with the briefest of delays!

  • columbine(erin) replied 10 years ago

Oh I do hope you get your things back!

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

Was waiting for this happy update.  Before xmas, too!  I lost my luggage during the 1984 Olympics in LA.  Not a good feeling, knowing just how much int'l travel was coming and going at the time.  Took over a week, but it came back to me.

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

Yey, Santa will be on time! Great news!

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

Oh, so glad to hear this, Suz! Poor delivery man, though.

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

YAY! The suitcase made it home!

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Wow, the Canadian service industry is putting the US to shame... First you and Ceit get your cream jeans lightning fast, and now the airline DRIVES your stuff to you days before Christmas?? It is a miracle. So happy for you!

  • bj1111 replied 10 years ago

    Whew!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Brilliant news, Suz. What an impressive delivery man. WOW.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

    Relief :)

  • Shirley replied 10 years ago

    yay.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Actually, Rae, this was U.S. delivery and service. Delta. We drove to Syracuse and flew from there. So it is good old American service at its best. And I must say, American service can be second to none.

  • LACeleste replied 10 years ago

    So happy about this news!

  • jayne replied 10 years ago

Congrats Suz,  no matter how often we lose the luggage, it is still a stress period waiting for it to return.  Glad for you.

All those crossed fingers and positive thoughts worked! Happy and relieved with you. :)

Sigh of relief. I couldn't even open this thread, I was so stressed. This has happened to me only my bag got run over by the plane and destroyed. I only take carry on now. So happy for you!

*Sigh of relief*, I've been holding thumbs for your luggage to turn up soon, Suz, and am so glad to hear that it has been returned. Hats off for the delivery man, wow!!
