Sweater dress found

I've been looking and looking for "my" sweater dress for a couple of months and tried several on. I struggled with most of the issues Angie mentioned -- price too high, colour wrong for me, length too short (or long), fabrication itchy, etc. etc. Or it sold out in my size before I could pull the trigger!

I think I've settled on this one from trusty BR. It's soft, easy, and casual. Some reviews noted that it is "huge" but for me it was TTS for BR. It's meant to be a loose shift fit. It probably wouldn't work on those with a sloping shoulder line because of the cut. It's a bit shorter than I'd hoped for (on the knee vs. midi) but will work with flat tall boots and I'm planning to wear tights anyway.

Note - this silvery grey would seem to be a slam dunk for me, right? Well...it is, sort of. The thing is, I feel "washed out" in it without darker and brighter accents. This is a very neutral outfit -- I just put it on because I only had charcoal tights on hand and I wanted to coordinate. In future I will probably wear blue tights and boots and red and blue accents to liven this up. Or nude hose and silver jewellery and boots or similar.

Anyway, SUPER happy to have this.

Suz, that is a home run!!

It is very nice on you.

I love sweater dresses. The only problem is that they stretch and lose shape after a while (around the butt). That's why quality material is very important. I hope yours will last, looking great!

Ooooh, that's wonderful on you. Good job!

  • rachylou replied 5 years ago

The buttons on it are what does it for me. Great find.

Fits nicely, and I actually don't mind the neutral look here.  I'd be so wary of bagging and stretching in the rear - hope it performs well for you!

    You found it, Suz.

  • Alicewonderland replied 5 years ago

Oh wow, it is gorgeous on you. It fits you well and I really like it styled like that.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

It will probably bag out in the rear -- they do that! It's okay. I'll just wash it and block it. :)

    KILLER

    Sooo gorgeous on you. LOVE.

I liked this in navy for me - but too short. Perfect on you!

I don’t have any bagging out issues with my sweater dresses. My olive BR midi sweater dress from last year is AMAZING. Did I just get lucky?

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Angie, it sounds like you are lucky and have a good fabrication. I own a sleeveless sweater dress that is like that -- it's all cotton but has ribs and they seem to jump back into place right away. No bagging or sagging. But, sleeveless. So not good for winter. I wear it in late spring/ early fall. Or sometimes as a jumper with a blouse underneath. :(

I suspect this BR dress will bag a bit, because it's not ribbed. I'll report back.

Just barely okay on the length. I was hoping it would be a bit longer since on one of the models it was, but no luck with that. However, it's a nice easy fit otherwise.

Great dress Suz! Notwithstanding length and possible bagging issues , it is perfect on you and for you

  • Helena replied 5 years ago

Oh, I love this! Might have to give the navy version a go!

Beautiful, fits perfect, the color is fantastic on you and you look really amazing. Bravo.

I came back to edit out my bagging comment - which was not asked for , and sounded crabby.  Sorry :(  I don't even wear sweater dresses and am not about to, so why do I even have an opinion ??  Ack.

  • taylor replied 5 years ago

That’s really beautiful on you !
And there you go ...making magic with a scarf again !

  • Katerina replied 5 years ago

The dress looks fantastic on you, Suz, love it! Perfect with this scarf and tights/boots combo, but it will be as gorgeous with dark blue and red and many other accent colours and patterns. I am just thinking about your big red earrings - wouldn’t they also look great with the dress?
    Anyway, what a FABULOUS purchase!

Oh my goodness, I love this dress on you. What an absolutely perfect find! You styled it beautifully. Waiting for the right dress and not settling certainly paid off.

  • Elizabeth P replied 5 years ago

This looks great Suz! Please report back on the butt bag situation.
Just curious... did you try it in the “tall” option to get the length you want?

  • Joy replied 5 years ago

More love for the dress. I want one and may have to endure the crowds and go to the mall this weekend. I like it on you as styled in the photo. But if contrast and color don t work, try texture in similar pale neutrals.

Congratulations on finding just the right sweater dress. It looks terrific on you, Suz. I like the button detail. Banana Republic came through for you!

  • Dreika replied 5 years ago

You look fantastic in this dress and fits you better than the model! Even with the accessories that you had on hand you don’t look washed out in it. With some contrast it really is a fabulous find for you! :)

Thus dress looks lovely on you, casually elegant and I notice that they also do it in pink which is rather lovely as well.

  • JAileen replied 5 years ago

I love how you accessorized it. You look fabulous in it.

  • Jaime replied 5 years ago

Love it - I think it will work with brown boots and stockings too.

  • Style Fan replied 5 years ago

Looks gorgeous on you.  Great styling.  I like Katerina's idea of red earrings.

  • Aquamarine replied 5 years ago

Looks super on you! It’s a nice blank canvas for all the fun layering options (scarves, jackets maybe) this time of year. Do report back on any issues.

  • Bijou replied 5 years ago

This is lovely and perfectly styled. It is a great neutral base that I think you will have fun wearing it.

  • Irina replied 5 years ago

I want to thank you, Suz! I mostly avoid BR now but after seeing you in the dress, I went yesterday and bought a navy one. I plan to wear it over pants. I like how it fits - I bough a petite dress in size S, my usual size in BR. The length is to the top of my knees and it’s fluid but not too oversized. My only problem is that all but one coat I have are shorter than a dress. So, I’m still undecided but this is the best sweater dress I’ve tried so far in terms of fit. Thanks again!

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Irina, glad you found it to work for you!

For coats...yes. This is an issue! I have a black trench coat that works with it, and I'm hoping I can also wear it with a cocoon coat that is a little shorter. But I'm still experimenting. I have yet to figure out the perfect solution for midis in winter -- and this isn't even a midi!!

  • Irina replied 5 years ago

Suz, I thought it is acceptable for a dress to stick out from under a coat when wearing with tights. I would not know, I have a few dresses and I wear them over pants. It looks much worse when a coat is too short. I long for summer :(

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Totally acceptable -- but sometimes the proportions (or colours) feel wrong to me. So I'm trying to puzzle it out!

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 5 years ago

That dress is fantastic on you, and will be a good canvas for lots of colors and styles.

  • replied 5 years ago

It looks great! Ive been deciding with that length i like maxi cardis as indoor toppers best, requiring a longer coat to avoid having a "tail".

  • Mainelady replied 5 years ago

Grand slam! That really is YOUR sweater dress! It looks gorgeous on you. I really like the darker accessories with it!

  • Joy replied 5 years ago

I ordered this sweater dress in the same light grey color. It came and is going back. I ordered a small for length and it is huge on me with the length still being iffy. The dress is soft and a great neutral. It is extra cute with button slits at the sides. It is meant for a more curvy figure than mine and the drop sleeves look like they don't know what they want to be on me. I am sad as this dress is exactly what I wanted.

  • Suz replied 5 years ago

Oh no, Joy! That is a shame.

I got the XS in this as I always do in BR stuff -- XS or 0 (sometimes a 2 for pants and jeans).

So sorry it did not work for you. I must be a tiny bit shorter and/or each item is a slightly different length. I saw on the models that some are at the knee (like mine is), some are below the knee (on a model????) and some are a bit shorter. So...inconsistencies, I suspect.
