The impractical CM dress arrived! Is it long enough?

It's an absolutely gorgeous dress. The lining, unlike many silk dresses, is a breathable fabric. The fit is good, I think. It could be a little looser in the bust, but it works.

My question -- is it long enough? I don't actually feel bad in it, FWIW, because it has length in the back.

What about footwear? I tried my taupe cage sandals, my old silver and nude wedges, and the black sandal booties to "Septemberize" it a bit (with jacket, too.)

What else could work? And do any of these?

I love the dress on you. All the shoe choices look good to me. I vote keep.

  • carter replied 8 years ago

Suz! This is crazy stunning on you! Desfinitely NOT too short. I think all the shoes work great, but my favorite is the taupe cage sandals.

    Just a total WOW!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 8 years ago

You have gorgeous legs Suz so of course it is long enough.  It looks lovely on you and I would say by the look on your face that you love it.

I like it with the black shoes which is surprising since i often gravitate to nudes.

  • Sadie replied 8 years ago

    Absolutely keep. Looks wonderful!

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

This dress is beautiful on you. Definately not too short. I am liking the black shoes the best, but they all work.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Killer Stunning. You will be in trouble with me if you return it.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Oh, yes. Plenty long enough. Like the first pair of taupe cage heels with it best.

  • merwoman replied 8 years ago

Stunning - all iterations are spectacular - my preference is for the taupe. I like the bookending effect, and then that leaves the focus on the pattern and your gorgeous smile.

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

I love it! The length looks perfect to me and I like all the shoes with it.

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

    Perfection in every iteration.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 8 years ago

I love it! It's much better than I even thought from the stock photo. I like either the more bare sandals or the black booties best.

  • unfrumped replied 8 years ago

    Oh wowsers. Superfab.
You know I am the too-short dress nag but this is really fine. I agree, something about the shape and hi-low works great. It is a great style for you.
I know the dress has its own architecture but it probably will work with various toppers when needed, too.

  • abc replied 8 years ago

Gah. Keep 1,000,000 times over. What Angie said.

  • Ornella replied 8 years ago

So beautiful! I opened the first photo and gasped. I love the earrings, btw.

Would #7 work with black opaque tights?

  • annagybe replied 8 years ago

I'm pretty sure this is the same dress I tried a few months ago looking for a maid of honor. It's a great dress, but both Angie & I deemed it too dark for the wedding.

  • Parsley replied 8 years ago

You look like a million bucks in that dress! Don't you dare even THINK about returning it.

If I were you, I would wear it at every possible opportunity!

  • kerry replied 8 years ago

Wow! You look fabulous in that dress. I like it with either pair of shoes.

  • Meredith replied 8 years ago

Swoon. I like it with the sandals or booties best.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Yes, Anna, this is the exact dress. I'd fingered it in the store around that time but didn't try it on -- at full price it was too spendy for my casual lifestyle and I was trying to be...um...practical. But on sale it is an incredible deal.

There was still one left in size 8 and also 00 in the Canadian store for anyone who is interested. I didn't check the US site. It's beautifully constructed -- can't say enough about the quality.

I agree it would be too dark for the wedding. Especially in your role -- it might be okay for a regular wedding guest.

I will wear it out to dinner and maybe to a spring awards ceremony. And maybe theatre.

YAY! So glad you all approve of it. It would have hurt my heart to send it back. ;)

  • replied 8 years ago

    So very nice.
Looks great with the jacket too.
Is the dress really that impractical? You don't have to worry about stains so much because the pattern hides them.

  • Peri replied 8 years ago

So pretty, and it really seriously looks great! I don't think it is too short at all.

  • approprio replied 8 years ago

Oh yes. Keep it. It looks amaaaayzing! It could easily go into autumn with opaques, booties and the right topper.

  • Gaylene replied 8 years ago

I can't think of a single reason why you'd want to send this dress back. It looks amazing on you.

  • replied 8 years ago

You look so pleased with yourself in photo number 4, it's adorable.
Yes, of course you should keep it, and no it's not too short.
You look great in this print and that neckline is beautiful with your shoulders and your so happy face.

  • replied 8 years ago

Perfect dress. End of discussion. You look beautiful in it :)  I prefer the black shoes - but they all work.

  • Cococat replied 8 years ago

Beautiful dress that looks fantastic on you. I like it with the cage heels and black booties for when the weather gets cooler.

I could also imagine it with a cropped denim jacket and your other sandals or flat lace ups for a more casual look.

  • MTBGirl replied 8 years ago

It's so perfect for you Suz! You look spectacular!

  • Marilyn replied 8 years ago

Looks beautiful on you, Suz.  Definitely a keeper.   I like low contrast / nude to you footwear so I like the first two best.

  • Joyce B replied 8 years ago

You look fab in all the versions.

  • columbine(erin) replied 8 years ago

I love the high-low hem on you, Suz, and the color palette, especially with the taupe sandals.

  • Marley replied 8 years ago

Love this on you Suz!  You look great - and as someone who generally doesn't like skirt-lengths that are above the knee, I really think this works - because it is full, and the back is longer.
What size did you get?  (Asking for myself!)

  • Sheila replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous on you Suz ! and the neutral sandals leave you and the dress for the show ... perfect !

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Yes!  It's perfection, Suz -- special and updated.  I know you don't need many special occasion outfits, but this one is different from the rest and I find that I still want a bit of variety in this sort of capsule.

I'm quite conservative about length, and have a thing about knees --- but I love this and think the length is flattering to you and the outfit as a whole.

  • Elle replied 8 years ago

Love the dress on you!  The length doesn't read as short because of the high low hem. All the shoes work but my preference is for the shoes in #1 which go so well with your hair.

  • Ginkgo replied 8 years ago

This is the perfect dress for you!  All shoes are good with it but I prefer the taupe,  however I especially like the earrings worn with it and how the pattern (which look like angles) echo the angles of your haircut.  You and this dress are perfectly in sync with each other.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

Absolutely stunning on you Suz! Not too short at all and a definite keep. Besides, you don't want to be in trouble with Angie! Lol :)

  • shedev replied 8 years ago

    Simply stunning.

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

LOVE, especially the bin low hemline...super flattering:)

  • christy replied 8 years ago

Echoing all the others - it's beautiful on you! I love the nude cage sandals best, but the black definitely works also.

  • Word Lily replied 8 years ago

Yay, this looks awesome on you!

  • E replied 8 years ago

    WOW!!!!!

    That is all. ;)

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

    Ohhhhh....thank you all so much.

Guess what? I wore it already!! We weren't going out, but Mr. Suz and I are alone tonight because our daughter is out, so I wore it for at-home date night!! And guess what? It worked perfectly. It feels SOOOOO comfortable with its relaxed cut  and it is super feminine.

I think it might just turn out to be a wildcard workhorse. Mr. Suz said the same. I mentioned a bit of guilt over the purchase because "I don't often wear dresses." To which he said, "Listen, you've worn a dress or skirt 5 times this week that I know of." (He's right, and I actually wore them more than that because I wore skirts twice when I was away doing business with my brother.)

Thanks for all the advice about footwear. It seems as if I have lots of options.

Marley, this is a size 0. As I mentioned, it feels/ felt a wee bit snug on the bust/ back/ underarm area but in wearing it has already eased up there. The rest is a very relaxed fit. It will work brilliantly (in the right size) on a rectangle, slim hourglass, slim pear (whose hips/ thighs are not super large) or IT shape. It would probably be a problem for a busty hourglass.

  • annagybe replied 8 years ago

I'm a true with a full bust hourglass & it worked for me.

  • Staysfit replied 8 years ago

WOW!!!!! I had a feeling this would be great!  WOW!!!! All the shoes work!  Stunning!

  • Susie replied 8 years ago

This is beautiful on you, Suz. And I think it's lovely that its first wearing was for date night...that is a special occasion indeed.

  • Eliza replied 8 years ago

Love this dress on you and am glad you have worn it. When you can't wait to wear it, you know it's a winner. Swoon worthy! Curious as to how a dress with this hemline would play with a lower vamp shoe. Agree that your taupe pair looks especially good. Brilliant find!

  • Mochi replied 8 years ago

I'm not sure I've ever seen you look better, or happier, in an outfit. What a lovely dress.

  • replied 8 years ago

    It is perfect.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

What Marley said. I also think the shortness in front is mitigated by the longer back. It looks beautiful on you.

  • dakotacheryl replied 8 years ago

    Wowsa!!  Love it!!

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

This is gorgeous, Suz! You look stunning in that dress.....the cut, pattern, length, hemline - all fantastic. All the shoe options are great too!

I read you already wore it?! Attagirl! I'm proud of you! If you're loving it, and you're already wearing it, and it feels so good....it WAS made for you!

Mr. Suz is a very lucky man if his wife looks like THAT for a home date night!!!! :P

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Anna, that is great news then for anyone who wants it! Sounds like it could be a winner for most body types. Having said that, you look really nice in a higher neckline, but some hourglasses don't -- it might have to do with neck length or something? Or overall proportions? Anyway, I know this neckline suits you and you can wear it but there are some fuller hourglasses who prefer more open necklines.

This dress is roomy around the mid-section so might even work for an apple shape if she could handle the high neckline. Hint -- it's really inexpensive for what it is, at the sale price.

I really enjoyed wearing it, so Angie is right that impractical items are worth their place in our closets sometimes.

I will also try with a lower vamped shoe. That will be more conventionally flattering but a bit less current. I did try with my Okalas but because they are print I felt it was too much going on.

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

Great dress, you look beautiful in it!!!

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Just gorgeous! Love the length, very flattering. Suz any of these renditions work. I think this dress looks just beautiful on you.

  • Elly replied 8 years ago

    I'm with Angie.

  • Echo replied 8 years ago

You look so amazing in this dress that when I first looked through the photos I didn't even notice the shoes! However, on second look, I definitely prefer the first pair of shoes with the dress alone. With the jacket, I like the black - the heaviness of the shoes balances the black jacket to me. I am so glad you have worn it and are keeping it!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

Suz, I agree with everyone. You look fabulous in the dress. I like the taupe sandals and the black booties equally well--great Septemberizing!
What about a flat sandal as an option, too? I think it would work with the above-knee hem in the front. Although come to think of it, you don't wear flat sandals. But a lower one, anyway, is worth a try.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Sharan, good idea. You're right I try to avoid completely flat because they aren't comfy for me, but I do have 1/2 inch wedge or almost flat sandals. I'll give those a go and see. I think it might work, too.

I actually think this dress could work with hose in cooler temps, along with a topper, of course. So who knows? Maybe I'll even try it with booties, proper.

  • Lucy replied 8 years ago

    Perfection! I love it!
And it looks like it will be versatile - it looks just as good with the jacket as without. Super find.

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Beautiful Suz! So glad it worked and that you decided to keep it. Love it with the black shoes.

  • rachylou replied 8 years ago

Spritely! And the length is right :)

  • goldenpig replied 8 years ago

You look fantastic in this dress and glad you already put it to good use! Love it with the cage sandals and black booties! It's the perfect length and I love the high low hem. You're just beaming in the pictures, which shows how happy it makes you (for good reason!).

  • Karin L H replied 8 years ago

What a gorgeous dress! You look stunning! To me all looks work.

  • Style Fan replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous!  So glad you decided to keep it.

  • replied 8 years ago

Wow! I'm glad you're keeping it. Wear and enjoy!

  • Colette replied 8 years ago

I'm really happy you are keeping the dress because it is so pretty on you. There is something about the edgy print and the feminine cut that is just so perfect.

  • JamC replied 8 years ago

It looks so good on you, I decided to order it and see how it works for me.  I can't wait to get it and try it on!  If I keep it, I will have enough grown-up date night dresses!  Thanks for finding this great deal.

  • replied 8 years ago

Beautiful dress on a beautiful woman.  Win/Win.  The length is just right in the front because it is longer in the back.  I like the lighter shoes with this dress because they lengthen the leg.  The darker shoes hold the eye with a sudden stop sign and I just want to flow from head to toe and beyond.  This is a dancing dress!

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Keep, no question! Stunning beyond compare!

  • harmonica replied 8 years ago

    Stunning!

  • replied 8 years ago

This dress looks like it was made for you, Suz! The print, style, length, fit, EVERYTHING is perfect. I predict much wear and zero boredom from this one. A winner wardrobe item.

  • Lyn D. replied 8 years ago

    Really beautiful Suz :) :)

  • Marilyn replied 8 years ago

Suz......I saw a SA at Club Monaco wearing this dress today.  Absolutely gorgeous!

And FYI......I took a peek at Nordstom today for the Rebecca Taylor dress.  They did not have it.   However, none of the RT dresses were as nice as the CM you just got.

  • frannieb replied 8 years ago

looks better on you then the model - so glad you already wore it - Go team wear.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Marilyn, thank you! So nice of you to scout for me.

And thanks all for the very sweet comments. I'm really going to enjoy this dress.

  • Tania replied 8 years ago

    Amazing!

  • Melinda SF replied 8 years ago

I love this dress, glad you are keeping it.  it feels, from a photos a bit loose in the waist but perhaps that is the style and the look you are going for?  I haven't read all the replies but I think the black shoes and the higher volume sandals in the first picture are both a touch too heavy and high contrast and they pull attention from your lower contrast features in your face.  The more open sandal puts the focus where it belongs.

My vote would be for a more neutral shoe if high volume, or a strappy sandal that goes with airiness of the dress and your delicate features. a heel definitely seems needed given where the dress cuts above the knee.

FWIW I think you could get away with leggings under this too on an airplane with ballet flats for a long flight.

It's always so fun to get a thing we've been waiting for! congrats!

Edited to add: I think you could also rock a denim jacket with this dress and a black fashion tennis shoe or chuck taylors, even a moto jacket with boots. very well done!

  • Dee replied 8 years ago

    Stunning!  A definite keeper!

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Um, I also think it looks sensational! (Never to late to join the crowd, right?)

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

I am too late here but how could I miss this? The dress is beautiful and the length is great - I found that when SOME of the skirt IN FRONT is abovethe knee but the back is longer it adds interest to the look while still being elegant.
I prefer the first pair of sandals and in general would prefer a lighter footwear for this dress.
I hope you keep it and enjoy and find many opportunities to wear it!

  • Janet replied 8 years ago

I'm very late to this, but I can't beleive you even had a question whether this works. Perfect dress for you!

  • Daria replied 8 years ago

It's perfect! Especially love it with the cage sandals and the booties.

  • Vix replied 8 years ago

    Hi Suz --

Another one late to the party (you're dressed for it!).

Such a perfect dress on you; love how it manages to have an element of fun mixed with its natural elegance. Don't mind the shoe choices but predictability fall in line with Marilyn's preferences/suggestions.

    Enjoy it starting NOW, please!

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

I'm late to this party but just wanted to say that the dress looks great on you.  I like all the shoe versions although the first taupe sandals are my favorite.  The black booties give it a bit of edge which could be a fun way to change up the look.
