Tulle skirt reveal: ETA further styling thoughts downthread.

In what is surely RECORD Covid delivery time , I got the Kate Hewko tulle skirt.

I have to apologize first for the absolutely horrific quality of the photos. It was the worst time of day to try this, but I need to go out on some errands and wanted to post while I could. I tried to lighten and brighten things but that distorted colours etc. You'll have to imagine a bit.

I didn't really style it too much -- just threw on a top and tried with a couple of toppers and various footwear.

Sizing -- the waist is TTS, I would say. There is not much give there, so if considering and between sizes in the waist, go up.

Hip area -- there is a tiny bit of give there because the underskirt is made of a slightly stretchy fabric -- very comfortable.

Quality -- I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, we are talking about a polyester tulle skirt, not a bespoke jacket, but the design is clever, the colours are really great IRL, the stitching is all very secure and even, the buttons of solid and attractive.

On to the photos!

First five images show it with pink flats -- just showing how it looks all around. I find the flats too "little girl" for this and would not wear it this way except in the house, I suspect.  I think the length is fine for me so it might be too short for you, Janet? You could call them and ask for lengths at your size.

Next image with navy booties and denim jacket.

7.8 with short pointed toe black booties.

9/10 with red plaid stompy boots -- this could work for double plaid with the right top or topper.

Trying it out with the gilet.

#14 shows the underskirt portion.

#15 and #16 show the fabric and a close up of waistband area.

It feels good on -- light and floaty. I would not say it makes me feel slim, however. There is still that feeling of a slightly pouffy waist/ hip area that you tend to get with full skirts, no matter what. At the same time, it's way less exaggerated than with many skirts of this kind and the pleats really do stay flat.

So....what think you? K/R?

A note -- Mr. Suz's initial reaction was positive. He loved the plaid.

KEEP. It looks so good, especially with boots!

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Love this on you, Suz. This could be a festival outfit with a pair of tulle fairy wings or a floral crown. My favorite is your second styling with the booties and denim jacket. You need to have a style for every season ready to go.

  • Preppy Pear replied 2 years ago

Keeeeeep! Looks so good on you. Very flattering and not too poofy at all. Darn it, now I want one, LOL.

  • Echo replied 2 years ago

Ooh, KEEEEEP! This skirt looks amazing on you. I love it with the boots and denim jacket, and the flats actually don't lean too little girl to me at all - perhaps because the skirt is asymmetrical and the crewneck sleeveless top takes away that vibe. I am not a big fan of the gilet with it, though, simply because it seems too long over long, so that the impactful factors of both the vest and the skirt get lost. This is a FABULOUS buy!

  • CarolS replied 2 years ago

It's a bit hard to see against the strong sun, but I think it's fabulous. Love it with the denim jacket and boots. I think you've got a winner!

  • RobinF replied 2 years ago

Love this skirt! I like all of these stylings but especially with the jean jacket.

  • Runcarla replied 2 years ago

Love it styled with boots and jean jacket.  Definitely tulle for grownups.  Gives me Vivienne Westwood vibes.  KEEP!

  • replied 2 years ago

Yes, keeps for sure! You look stunning. Very unique and fun :) So many outfit possibilities…

  • delurked replied 2 years ago

nice. It looks fun. And of course any time you can add a black boot I'm a fan. A grownup version of a plaid schoolgirl skirt is what it looks like to me. I would definitely keep it.

Also, these colors are Janet's as well. (Oh wait, and mine. I'm considering, but already own the skirt in finds and I'm not sure if its just too much of this style)

    https://www.anthropologie.com/.....0&

For all that this style of skirt has some volume, I don't think your plaid one is overly puffy.

  • Janet replied 2 years ago

It looks so good on you, Suz! I think you should keep. Love it with boots and denim jacket. Gah, the color scheme is so good for you and for me! Love the plaid.

I’m a little scared of the volume below the waist. I’m a lot bigger than you and I am quite acutely aware of things that emphasize that part of my body. If I tried it, I’d size up to a L so that hopefully the waistband would sit a little lower (my body is like a ski slope — narrowest right below the bust and everything goes out from there, sigh), which would not only give a chance of an easier fit but also give me a little more length. Hmm.

  • Inge replied 2 years ago

The skirt itself is gorgeous, and it's just soooo good on you, Suz!! Absolutely love the styling in the last photos too!!
Definitely a keeper in my book!-)

  • Minaminu replied 2 years ago

such a special piece! It is a great on you, keep it!!!!

  • Jonesy replied 2 years ago

That is super-duper fun and looks fab on you, even if Covid is going to force you to swan around your home in it for a while before you get to wear it out for a dressy occasion :)! Love it with the denim jacket and gilet, especially.

  • replied 2 years ago

I haven’t read the other comments yet , but I think you need to keep this . It’s pretty darn cool - and you can be guaranteed you won’t see it anywhere else or on anyone else . It is not poufy and unflattering at all - I’m really surprised because we know how these skirts can be . Kudos to the designer for some clever pattern drafting here .

  • ChristelJ replied 2 years ago

Oh how great! A skirt like this makes it look as though the wearer is celebrating life.  I especially love it with the black booties.

  • replied 2 years ago

Also : you hair is gorgeous right now . What a great cut !

  • MsMary replied 2 years ago

LOVE, especially with the denim jacket! KEEP!

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 2 years ago

How flippin’ adorable! Love it with your pixie, your smile in 3, and the heeled boots in 8.

You’ve certainly shown you can wear well. The hard question is whether you would.

  • slim cat replied 2 years ago

Pretty perfect on you! Love your hair ( hair envy ;) ).

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

Thank you, everyone. I will try to get some better photos later. It's such a pain that the only place I have for a full length mirror is opposite a window. It makes it really hard to get good photos. I need to think if I can find a portable mirror that I could keep in the bedroom closet and haul out for photos from time to time....hmmmm.

Anyway...it's nice the skirt is meeting approval! I will try it on again a bit later and do some more styling. I am inclined to keep, I think. I do, in fact, have not one but TWO occasions for this skirt in September/ early October. In September, there is a small (50 person) IN PERSON launch for my book in Vancouver with a reading and then (maybe) some dancing afterwards. Mostly outdoors, socially distanced, everyone needs to be vaxxed to attend.

And then on October 2nd I'm appearing IN PERSON at the Victoria Writers Festival, for an event that combines words and music. Again, 50 attendees, tops, masks on audience, etc. This is the type of item that's perfect for this kind of event...

Janet, I think your idea of ordering the L is excellent. It will, indeed, sit lower, giving you the length you're going to want.

I must say, the customer service was STELLAR. My phone is not with me now (getting new phones and Mr. Suz has it at the shop) but as soon as I can, I'll take a photo of the little card she sent and the fully compostable mailing bag.

It does need a wee steam (which I haven't given it yet) but even out of the bag, it's pretty good.

I think this company is really worth patronizing, esp. for Canadians. Great find, Janet -- thank you!!!  Or thank the internet algorythms, I guess!

  • Aquamarine replied 2 years ago

Wow, it’s fab on you! I’m picturing all kinds of jackets with it, but I do like the denim jacket too.

  • Angie replied 2 years ago

KILLER CUTE SKIRT! Must keep Suz, and just perfect for the Writers Event in Oct :)

LOVE #7 and #12 especially! Ditto Jonesy.

Try it with your tall boots too.

  • kkards replied 2 years ago

    FAB!
especially love it with the denim jacket, I’m picturing it with a blazer for a different kind of juxtaposition….and do you have tall boots? I’m thinking that would be another cool look….and sneakers and a hoodie….oh, I’m seeing this being one of those unexpected workhorses

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

I do have tall black boots -- 2 styles -- flat riding boots and heeled fitted boots. I just didn't feel like dragging them out of the cupboard, ha!

Here are some of the items I plan to try with it....footwear first -- lots of options.

Jackets -- I think it needs a short jacket, but I do have some options there.

Shirts/ blouses, tops -- some options as well.

  • Brooklyn replied 2 years ago

Looks great Suz, especially with the jacket. And your hair really adds a lot to the look. Nice edge.

My only question is will you have a good window to wear it in (in terms of occasion and Canadian climate)? But I see you are already thinking that through above.

  • replied 2 years ago

    Joining the keep chorus :)

  • kkards replied 2 years ago

And back to add…YAY for the in person events!

  • JAileen replied 2 years ago

I love it on you!  And as you say, not with the flats.  The denim jacket is a good option.  I’m not sure what kind of boots I like.  Sandals could be an option.

  • Sal replied 2 years ago

    Fun and gorgeous on you!!

Love it with the boots and could see it with your heels too.

Definitely could bridge the seasons with hosiery too.

    How fun:)

  • replied 2 years ago

    Dancing - gasp !

  • nemosmom replied 2 years ago

    OMG sooo keep!!!

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

I still don't have my phone so can't snap new photos (yet) but have been trying on some items with it. So far, I'm finding that a top that goes OVER the waist instead of being tucked pleases me more, although I have lots of "to tuck" options. But what I've liked best so far are these: they are gentle peplums.

For footwear, on a dressy occasion, I'd definitely wear the EF pumps. They are great with it.

Jackets that work great are the little military knit, the Trouvé tux jacket, and my moto, though with the moto I definitely need heavier footwear to balance.

I will also try it with my sequinned cami. And with turtlenecks.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 2 years ago

Omg I love this so much on you

  • unfrumped replied 2 years ago

Keep! You will have fun finding your favorite stylings.
I have a Garnet Hill tulle skirt I hope I may wear again. I also tend toward untucked but short tops with it.
For different seasons you could try short boxy T’s or a cropped ( not midriff) cashmere sweater.

  • Jaime replied 2 years ago

I am absolutely delighted to see you in this skirt Suz! I feel like this is exactly in line with your overall style goals (if I may presume to have a sense of them). And it looks absolutely smashing on and in so many ways. And you have just the events to make it a sensible addition to your wardrobe. And it is Canadian! Big win all around - hope to see it on Janet and possibly others eventually too!
(Also hair is looking especially fab!)

  • CarolS replied 2 years ago

Looking at all your options for styling this skirt is making me giddy! The moto. The military jacket. The blazer. Turtlenecks. White denim jacket. A magenta sweater. Wheeeee!!!!

The question really seems to be now, when WON'T you want to wear it?

The live events sound marvellous. Enjoy!

  • Bijou replied 2 years ago

I love it and would wear this in a heartbeat anywhere and everywhere. Of course this is about you and not me, but wow, if ever there was a tulle skirt with your name on it, this one is it!

  • Jessikams replied 2 years ago

Adore it with toppers. I bet it would be great over tights too. Bring on the layers! Tulle is so much more visually interesting than the usual winter leggings or skinnies.

  • CocoLion replied 2 years ago

I hope you keep it Suz.  I love it with the stompy boots tfirst, then the pointy ankle boots.  I could also see it going well with a high-heeled edgy pump.

  • lyn67 replied 2 years ago

I couldn't even make it to the end of your picties here-as I became so  excited just seeng it in the first some!!! It fits  and S.U.I.T.S. you gorgeously!!!!!! You styled it so grown up,  I would say---it's really killer-even with those flats in the first raw!!! Please, KEEP!!!!

  • viva replied 2 years ago

    It's fantastic. LOVE.

  • Irina replied 2 years ago

Glad it worked out, the skirt looks fantastic on you. It is great to have a unique, unexpected, statement piece in a wardrobe like yours or mine that is fairly modern classic. Happy for you!

  • The Cat replied 2 years ago

The skirt looks perfect on you, in particular with the short jacket.

How great that you already have places/events where you know you can wear it!

  • Mary Beth (formerly LBD) replied 2 years ago

KEEP!  That skirt looks amazing on you!

"I didn't really style it too much -- just threw on a top and tried with a couple of toppers and various footwear."   Seriously?   You just threw those looks together fast, and the result is fabulous!

  • Laurie replied 2 years ago

It's great to see you, Suz! I love this for you and join the jean-jacket-and-boots group.  I am excited to see you style it further!

(My solution, since my good full length mirror also faces a window - Get a cheap mirror at Target, prop it on a yoga block. Tuck it in the closet when you don't need it.)

  • Kyle replied 2 years ago

Must wear with stompy boots and denim jacket. So distinctive, chic and fun. Love.

  • Janet replied 2 years ago

Seeing your styling ideas makes me want to try it too. I can envision a lot of styling options for myself, just wary about the silhouette on me! I suppose if I tried it and it looks awful I’d just be out the return shipping cost.

  • Debbie replied 2 years ago

Suz-I love this and you are making me want to try it. The jacket and the boots with it perfection.

  • Mainelady replied 2 years ago

Congratulations on your book and the events related to it! Ooooh! The tulle skirt looks like it was custom made for you! Your styling options will be so much fun! I can’t wait to see what you choose!

  • Grace replied 2 years ago

Especially love #8 and #10 with the jacket and boots!!! It's wonderful.

Love it!  So special and fab!  Plaid Tulle!  This is the sort of item that creates unique personal style!  Keep and enjoy!

  • ZoeyGirl replied 2 years ago

Your smile says it all! Your ability to style it with items you already own says it all too! I love it, you look fab... KEEP.

  • Christina F. replied 2 years ago

Love love love. I am having similar trouble to Janet with skirts proofing out too much under the waist, or else I’d copy you. ;) I’m trying to buy few skirts anyway so I will enjoy it vicariously.

  • kellygirl replied 2 years ago

More love for this! What a fun statement skirt!!

  • columbine(erin) replied 2 years ago

Such an absolutely fun skirt! I think it looks great with the denim jacket and just about any footwear

  • Helena replied 2 years ago

    So good on you Suz!

  • Greyscale replied 2 years ago

Love it! The denim jacket is a great look, and I bet it would look great with a sleeveless version too (denim vest, but jacket style). Very 90s.

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

Thanks, all. I ordered a new mirror just so I can model a few more looks for you in a room without as much light interference. Stay posted! :)

  • Jonesy replied 2 years ago

Returning to this thread to say congrats on your upcoming in-person book-related fun!! Yay! How wonderful to be able to share your work in-person!

Also excited about your new mirror :).

  • Cardiff girl replied 2 years ago

Looks very edgy in a good way on you.punk lite,Vivienne Westwood kind of edgy.l vote keep it!

  • Laura replied 2 years ago

Suz, I'm terribly late to this but holy cow, you knocked this one out of the park! Killer skirt and amazing outfit combinations. Congratulations on your book - would love to hear more about that too! Is it available to pre-order?

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

Thanks, Laura -- the book has been out since May -- this is just the first in person event (assuming it happens, ha!). Canada's vaccine rollout was slower than in the US so we had no in -person events in the spring here.

  • Sally replied 2 years ago

Oh when I saw it with the boots and the denim jacket, I immediately wanted one of those skirts myself.  That is fabulous.  I would definitely keep it.

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 2 years ago

Amazing to have a grown-up life with multiple opportunities to wear tulle, seriously!

I don’t want to post the same thing twice, but I wonder what you think of the reasons for tulle’s current popularity in the Fashionista article I just posted on Star’s purple tulle thread.

  • Deborah replied 2 years ago

Suz this skirt is everything! And you have styled it beautifully. Tulle skirts play a key role in my wardrobe and of course now I want this one lol! On the search now a little closer to home xxx
