WIW: with a cue from Beth Ann

At my house we observe both Hanukkah and Christmas. And I am glad of it -- because without a happy focus I must confess that I find these dark days difficult. That's why I  really love Beth Ann's idea of "subtle" seasonal dressing -- giving a nod to the season without going overboard on the holiday theme. Creating a small and do-able fashion challenge sounds like a brilliant idea to me.

Next year I plan to embrace this with greater gusto (and, er, organization). But for now, I'll just do it as I can.

This week's entry was my Sunday shopping outfit. Grey sweater, denim pencil, berry belt, plaid tights, cranberry booties, and cranberry coat. I got some compliments on the tights. Too bad they already have some pulls in them. I can probably make them last another couple of wears and then they will be toast.

Love the color repeating in booties, tights, coat!

  • replied 10 years ago

Oops, meant belt, booties, coat. Looks great.

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

that cranberry coat should light up any dark day, or mood!

  • carter replied 10 years ago

Awesome tights and gorgeous coat! You look very seasonal.

  • Kristin SF replied 10 years ago

Wow that coat is fantastic! What a great color on you. Is it new this year? It really looks fab on you, great choice!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Lovely outfits - the coat is fantastic on you :)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Thank you! No, Kristin -- the coat was one of my first big purchases after joining YLF and it is going into its 3rd winter. It is in perfect shape. I will have it for ages. I love the collar, which can be worn 3 different ways.

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Simple and strict. I like this style on you. With the coat it looks festive. The coat and boots are a match made in YLF heaven. (Do I sound blunt? I'm on an iPhone. I still can't type w thumbs I use only my r index and I struggle.)

    Gorgeous, Suz! What great tights!

  • vipanchi replied 10 years ago

Awesome! where are those tights from? And the coat?I am hunting for a good coat myself - if that one is still available - I think I will get that!

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

The tights and booties are so perfect together!

And happy holidays from another mixed Christmas/Hanukkah household!

  • Beth replied 10 years ago

Love it. The coat is gorgeous on you and I really love the cool texture of the tights. Strict and interesting. :)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Alas, vipanchi, I doubt if the tights or the coat are available any more. I bought them both several seasons back. The coat is Hilary Radley and the tights were some Italian brand that I picked up in a sale bin at a hosiery speciality shop.

Thanks, all - and thanks especially Beth Ann!

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

The coat, tights and booties were made for each other.  You look beautiful and subtly festive.

  • E replied 10 years ago

That coat is so incredible I can't even focus on anything else! Gah! Simplicity at its most beautiful.

The tights are really neat too, too bad about the pulls. My polka dot tights have a bad run but luckily it's in the very upper thigh, so I sealed it with nail polish and just depend on my skirts to cover it up.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

You are cuter than cute, Suz. How fun to see you in plaid hose, booties and a denim skirt. Huggable. Adorable. And festive.

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

I am loving the tights and that cozy coat. Festive and fun. You have risen to your own challenge brilliantly.

  • replied 10 years ago

I'm so sorry about the dark days. They really affect me too; a few cloudy days and I'm a big baby, moping about, not being motivated to do anything. I can remember how dreary it was when Winter was 9 months long. :(

Well, you're certainly cheering things up with this outfit! I love how the tights show even with your coat all done up (instead of missing the best part of the outfit). I've missed seeing that coat, so thanks for including it. I'm glad to hear it's going strong! You look so cheery and bright, I'm sure you made someone's day today.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Fantastic outfit! I simply must attempt to copy this. Those tights are fabulous, hopefully they will last for more than a few wears.

  • MuseumGal replied 10 years ago

    My goodness, that coat, I just, I can't, I ... gurgle, gurgle ... I WANT

  • Shirley replied 10 years ago

Cranberry. I like you subtle festive outfit.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I see why the tights got comfortable. I love that coat on you too!

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Awesome tights!! And what a way to bring some festive colors into your outfit! The coat is just luscious!

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

Wow on the coat! That's a holiday in itself. I hadn't seen it before and I thought I was following you :) it's simply gorgeous and sophisticated. I'm glad you have two holidays to look forward to.

  • Mochi replied 10 years ago

The coat is astonishing. I also love the tights. Well, the whole outfit is super. It just is.

  • carambola replied 10 years ago

You look gorgeous and festive in that coat! The pairing with the tights and booties made me smile - so fun.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Bring on the holiday spirit, the more the merrier! Red and grey is one of my favorite color combinations and those plaid tights are so much fun! (too bad they are letting you down. This is the worst thing about hose and why I hate to pay big money for them - they never last.)
I also wore my red booties today for a bit of holiday cheer!

  • Angela K replied 10 years ago

Love the tights. Sorry that they won't be around too much longer. They really tie the outfit together. But on the bright side with all the fun colors and patterned tights available maybe you will find new inspiration just around the corner. You always look so stylish. :)

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Yeah!  More holiday cheer!  Well, you may have heard that I'm dressing for Hanukkah, too, since those rascally Lutherans have draped the church in blue and white!  Hee.

Love your shopping outfit.  It's a perfect example of creating a look that reminds you of the specialness of this time of year throughout the day without shouting it too the world.  How clever to include the belt!  I don't have colored belts, so I'm always resorting to scarves.  I am, however, blessed with jewel tones!

Aren't the Munros comfy?  I can walk miles in them!

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

You look great--seasonal, not kitschy.  I love those tights, and that coat?  DELICIOUS.  It's like sangria and candy apples and cotton candy altogether and had a sublime cranberry baby.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I did notice that Beth Ann! And how convenient to add another set of colours to the holiday roster! I am all on board for that!

The Munros are like SLIPPERS. Honestly, they are that comfy people. Just lovely.

Ariadne, yum!! I think I need a glass of that coat.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

*got together, not altogether.  My brain and typing fingers are fried!

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Love cranberry(and fuchsia:-)) on You, Suz! Those thights are awesome-give the outfit just the right amount of pattern, but the color repetition is genial! As always simple and comfy looking!

Now, I don't know what you've decided on your outfit for Stepson's wedding, but can't wait to see! (I can remember looking at your post without logging in, and loved all-including somebody else's ideea-if still in doubt-to just wear an apron (as a host) -then  quickly change to match the crowd:-)

  • Niefern replied 10 years ago

You look great, and I love the colours. Lovely tights, what a shame they are not going to last much. Is the denim skirt confortable? When I was young I had a denim skirt and I *hated* it because it was so unconfortable (no stretch then), I have such bad memories that I have never bought another one!

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

    I .love this great tights.

  • Alexandra replied 10 years ago

You look fabulous! I'm really loving that coat. Too bad the tights may not last much longer, they are cute.

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Oh my goodness Suz, you've outdone yourself with this one.  So pulled together, but in a casual relaxed way. That coat is amazing.  And you now have to tell me more about those booties (brand, where you got them from)... I've admired them, but if you're going to rave about the comfort.... I might just have to actually investigate...

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

    Thank you all!

Elizabeth, the booties are the famous Munro American Robyns -- an Angie pick from NAS. You might have to size up half a size. They're an incredibly easy bootie to wear.

Niefern, they don't make denim skirts the way they used to! Thank goodness. Nowadays they all have a bit of stretch. This is a cheapie from Old Navy (I think I paid $7 for it on sale) but it is wearing well. I don't wear it as often in winter because denim does tend to stick to tights, making it necessary to make adjustments throughout the day, but my coat was covering it so I wasn't too worried about a malfunction. In summer, this one is just fine. I do prefer the ones that don't have the front zipper (which makes a pooch from the side at the belly) but such is life...for now, this one does me pretty well.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

A fab outfit.  I am surprised at how versatile that red colored bootie is.  I'm starting to think about adding that to my fall shopping list for next year.  All my footwear is black, brown or a shade of camel.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Lisa, I have decided that I need a pair of coloured footwear in rotation at all times. These booties are extremely versatile and useful. My plan going forward is:

One dark neutral (black or navy...or perhaps one of both)
One light neutral (light taupe or grey...or perhaps one of both)
At least one animal print or other pattern (if it can be light coloured, like my SE Pettys, so much the better)
    One coloured (like these Munros).

  • replied 10 years ago

Suz, I'm late to this, but I'm glad I saw it. You look splendid. I'm joining the fan club for your boots and coat; just lovely. Fun tights too!

  • Alassë replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous color for a coat (says another cranberry coat wearer)!

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

    Lovely Suz!
I too have found some great winter tights in sale bins, and at a good $ :)
A timely reminder to wear my reddish belt today to a X-mas morning tea.
